I have a mac book core2duo belonging to a mate which was running OSX 10.5 but it started to get bloated so my mate decided to reinstall using the OSX Disc which came with the NoteBook .He reformated the hard drive using Gulid ? and jorunal extended and now when he holds down C and boots from the OSX disc it give an error saying that OSX is not compataple with the macbook even though it was the OS that was on it to begin when you press canel it seems to be reading the disc but an ERROR sign comes up it shows a blinking folder with a question mak inside of it and that just sits there .??
he has tried to even install xp and it wont take it .the harddrive seems to be fine as ive used disk utility to check it and ive tried all kind of formats and partitions to no avail . Can anyone throw some light on this its starting to drive me mad never mind him as windows is my backgarden but MAC im a bit lost .He had bout this Macbook on ebay when it was about 4 months and as far as im aware the apple care is up on it ...

    Thanks in advance
    Dub

i would say trying to rebuild the drive with disk warrior is the best idea i would have at the moment. or else put the mac in target mode (command + t at boot) and use another machine to format it to hfs+ journaled.

I have NOT experienced the same problem but had other problems arising from multiboot setup. The reformatting may have caused the problem (obviously). There is some discussion about the correct format for 10.5 in "triple booting" (google). If you cannot boot from the original DVD (not the restore disc?), then you may have to boot from another networked drive with leopard OS on. Or use macbook as a firewire drive on another mac running 10.5.2. Then format using the options from disk utility from the OS. Then go back to reload the system with the original OS DVD. Hope you get it working. Worst cast case you can pull out the HD and reformat and reload it independent of the macbook!

Surely if you are booting from DVD, the formatting of the HD is irrelevant. Are you sure this DVD is the one belonging to the MacBook? How did he reformat the HD without booting from DVD?

Try a reset of the PRAM ( alt +apple + P + R on power up) then try booting fromDVD. There is an erase install option on the install DVD.

OK then where do i start ive had this problem bugging the Sh!Te for a couple of months now and i got it fixed today i tracked the problem down to an interuped frimware update and i had to use a EPI Frimware recoverey CD and even at that it still would not run target mode or single user mode ???? it had a lot messed up on it but in the end i used a Imac to clone it drive over to the macbook .so i got 10.4.11 back up onto it and now im running winxp in boot camp and all is fine .And the system i cloned from has tons of software goodies on such as finalcut pro and lots more .
So now all thats left to do is sell the fecker after all that so if anyone is interested ???..Thanks a lot for your help lads between you all you's where right in one way or the other .
The good thing that came out of all of this is that ive learned so much more about the MAC which is always a good thing :-)
