    Hi guys,

Basically, I have old VHS tapes of my nan's 90th that I want to transfer to dvd.

I have this Medion 8824 with a tv card http://www.medion.de/md8824/uk/flash.html

I hook the video up and it's playing but I can't pick up anything. I've got VISTA Premium and I've tried going into Media Centre and scanning for channels, or tried the Movie Maker. But nothing.

Would really appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

    Thanks a mill
    Quad

Ok , based on this ,

    http://www.medion.de/md8824/uk/flash.html

Here is your problem , the only video input on that PC is a DVB T tuner , thats no good for a video recorder , it will only receive digital terrestrial transmissions. A Video recorder outputs analog.

You will need something like this ,

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=340732

That particular product comes with all the cables and software you will need to grab your video and turn it into the movie file of your choice or even make a DVD.
There are many many products like this , shop around and you may find one cheaper.

There are internal cards that will do the job as well , but dont forget your going to need all the necessary cables and software.

I am in the same boat as the OP and would be grateful for some advice

if you were to convert VHS to a more modern storage format .. i.e. DVD , mpeg etc.

what format and what method would you recommend ?

basic requirements of the format would be ease of storage , low cost , ease of distribution and less likely to degrade over time.

is it worth transferring them onto DVD . or is this format also on the way out ?

I transfered some old VHS tapes to DVD recently as I wanted to get rid of my now useless VCR anyway. Given that DVD media is extremely cheap now anyway, there's not much reason in compressing the video and any type of compression (like DivX) would make the disc less portable to bog-standard players. I just transfered the files as MPEG2 streams via my TV tuner and burned them to DVDs with no problems. And even though it is likely that DVDs will in fact become obsolete down the line, you are far more likely to have a working DVD player/PC around than a VCR in a number of years so it's probably worth transferring them now and worrying about the DVDs themselves much further down the line...

    Hi,

That Medion PC also has :

    1x Composite Video In
    1x S- Video In

    and Nero Vision

Could they be utilised by the OP?

Also, try searching here also http://www.medionsupport.com/phpbb2/portal.php

thanks. i was thinking along similar lines.

I have one of these on order

just to clarify . unlike the OP I have a Dimension E520 and not a Medion PC

should this do the job ?

The tuner on that medion may also be analogue?

    From the link http://www.medion.de/md8824/uk/flash.html

Unrestricted TV enjoyment – integrated TV Tuner for digital (DVB-T)
    or analogue television

I know the medion I have has a 3 in 1 tuner - also include a satelite tuner.

    regards,
