Penalty Point

So I got my first penalty point for making a right-turn at the wrong time - not allowed from 7am - 10am or the fact four Gardai were there waiting, take your pick.

Anyhow, I duly filled out the form for the fine and my driver's license number and this morning I got a letter back saying my license number is not on the National Drivers License file. Quite a stern letter saying that if I don't supply the correct details asap, off to court with me, yada, yada, yada. Problem is these are the details actually printed on my license!! So I tried to ring them to explain and was told "my call is important to us - please hold" for about 20 minutes before the system hung-up (efficiency at its finest).

So now what? I'll send the details again(!) but they haven't changed. Anyone else have this?

FWIW this is a regular Irish license renewed three years ago no problem

what the hell is a vanilla license??

A "vanilla" anything is an expression used to explain that something is plain without and sort of change from the norm. In this context it is a license that was obtain from the regular path of provisional, test, pink, renewed pink. It wasn't a "free" upgrade (ala 80's) or a swap from UK or elsewhere.

I'll edit the text to clarify things.

Is there a drivers licence number on the original letter they sent you?

It isn't really a take your pick situation is it? Both things needed to be happen for you to get the points, either one of them on its own would not have resulted in you receiving points.

Yes, and it's my driver license number (in the letter). Apparently this number isn't on the National Drivers License File. This was issued by Dublin City Council so I don't see why not. I've verified that I sent the right number and I did.

True - but I mean in the context of "wrong" time :)

Do a search on www.askaboutmoney.com, I think there is a recent thread similar to this...

    Which number did u provide?
There are 2 numbers on the standard (pink) irish licence.
There is a large no in RED which you would assume is the correct number to provide, but in fact this is the wrong one, it's the smaller one.
Normally the letter accompanying the fine or fine notice itself, tell you which number to use.

I provided the correct number. It's the one in black that is in the box entitled Number / Uimhir.

    @whowantstoknow - I'll check now thanks!

Then you have done nothing wrong. Any judge will dismiss the charge if it goes to court, but if you do get a summons, contact the prosecuting garda who should get it dismissed without you having to attend. You may even save the cost of the fine.
    Good Luck :)

So it seems on AAM that one poster was in the same situation as me and basically push it back to the Gardai / Fines office. My license is valid, the number is valid, I think I'll just send them back a letter stating the position and see what happens.

Photocopy your license and send a copy back?

Its a "driving licence" not a drivers licence.

Is the number a 9 digit number?

The reason i ask this is that all driving licences "should" have 9 digits, BUT some old licences have only 6 or 7 numbers on them. These licences have a "/" in somewhere inbetween the 6 or 7 numbers.

    eg. 35/07874

IIRC the way to solve this is put in a couple of zero's where the "/" is to bring it up to 9 digits.

To the op i would send them off a photocopy of my d/l and if they cant figure it out **** em.
