hi all, i'm new to this forum and new to SLR Cameras so i'm hoping you can help me out. As the title suggests i'm going to buy the canon 400d, providing i don't get any very negative points about it here. I have had many digital cameras in the past but this will be my first proper SLR Camera. Has anyone else here got a 400d? Would you recommend it? What are the main pros and cons? I understand you probably get loads of posts like this but i would really appreciate your opinions and advice

    Thanks,
    Tracker-man

It's normally not a good idea to bump something until it goes off the main page. People can see it and will reply when they can.

To be honest, this type of questions gets asked a massive amount, as you have already acknowledged, so it may be a little bit of time before someone comes back with an answer for you.

Especially as not everyone will have experience with the camera in question.

The 400D will be grand for you, wait til you see the difference in picture quality compared to your previous Cams, start off on automatic then move to P then when your balls hit the ground try M for Manual!

Buy the 400D. It is an excellent camera. The image quality will blow you away. Some reviewers have suggested it is too small for Western male hands but I don't agree. My hands are not exactly dainty, my main camera is a 5D, and I find the 400D fits nicely in my paws.

By the way, as soon as you get used to it start shooting RAW to get the most from it.

    Thanks guys,
Sorry Dragan, i'm not in the habit of bumping just hoping to make the purchase this weekend !
From other sites it seems to be a good entry level camera, For me its still not cheap but it should last.... shouldn't it? Are Canon cameras generally durable or flimsy in the SLR range?

I've found my 400d to be very robust. I usually just carry it in my backpack, so it gets a few knocks. It's also gotten fairly wet due to rain but I've never had a problem with it.

I do find it a little small for my hands but that sure doesn't stop me using it.

Thanks again, is the Lens in the box, the one that comes as standard good enough for a wide range of situations, eg. Sport and scenery? Or is it likely I will need to upgrade to a better one.

Not a problem! Was really just hoping with a smooth entry to the photography forum you'd stick around and end up posting pics. :D

These days i can seem to find enough to look at!

Anyway, for what its worth the camera you are talking about is the one i plan on getting myself.
