    First...

What kind of Acer is it?

    What are it's specs?

What settings are you running on it?

Do you have some sort of Anti-Virus program?

    Do you have a Virus/Spyware.?

    Is it running vista?

yup running vista, 2 gb ram, norton anti virus. it's a friends laptop was going to format it's probably has every virus going just by the amount of useless programs and the number of toolbars installed and it's a aspire 5200

Vista + Norton Anti Virus = All memory gone :)

Formatting and removing useless program will probably work. Look at the startup programs, remove the unnecessary ones that you do not want when the system start ups like messengers etc.

Google ccleaner, install and clean up your registry, defragment your disk. All this will work to some extent.

Dump norton, it's awful, avg is free and much better, and norton is a process hog too.
