Thats funny alright, especially "He recommends a Kel-Tec .380 pistol, which he describes as "a nice little handgun that fits in your pocket".

If you haven't seen it already rent out the dvd "Bowling for Columbine".
The start of the movie has Michael Moore in a bank recieving a shotgun for opening an account with the bank.

Great idea....it would be very handy to have a gun to wave at the romanian window washers who hassas you around the m50 redcow in the evening time.

A huge amount of artistic licence and fact fudging went into the editing of that.

Seriously, guns are legal in the US so whats the big deal? If they were giving a big bag of coke with every car there would an issue.

and similary with the bank in Bowling for Columbine, they have loads of guns sitting there and lob one at you with your vlc. The garage give you a cheque towards the cost of you going and buying a gun.

Maybe Mitsubishi could include a gun with every purchase of their new Evo 6 Extremes. :D

Spent some time in US & friends of mine all had guns in the glovebox or under the seat, bloody nuts!! Let's see will I use the horn or the gun....
Know which one I would make use of sometimes & that's the problem.

Did anyone notice a while back that Lidl were selling balaclavas and hammers at the same time?

I actually bought a hammer and a balaclava at the same time in an army surplus store a few months ago. I didn't notice anything funny about it until the dealer joked about it.

It was just as legal as the car dealers promotion, no big deal to my mind.

I live in the US, and I kind of want a gun...never had one though, so I don't even know what the process is.

I have never seen any shootings on the road though...I think the people understand that murder is a lot more serious, and punishable, than using the horn...or even flipping someone off.

It wasn't a shotgun, it was a hunting rifle.
Sorry, pedantic I know but it's a big difference

It's asking to be robbed -- I was in a Lidl when it was robbed a couple of months ago... and the robbers were wearing balaclavas and had hammers and other tools.

Kinda forgetting about the police with that saying aren't they....

That kind of easy access to guns also give the average person the opportunity to become an outlaw pretty quick, if they happen to majorly loose their temper.

Exactly, if someone loses their temper here, they'll get out of the car & confront each other at worst.

If you're giving out free guns with your cornflakes in the states a minor accident could end up a lot worse.

Would you like some of the skangers around the place getting their hands on a gun by just buying a car. It's scary enough that they have a car in the first place when you see them flying around the roundabout on the Malahide Rd sideways....

Theres a big difference between handing out a gun with every packet of cornflakes than handing out a gun with a car. For starters you need to produce your license when buying a car, all you show would be your club card if you are buying a packet of cornflakes. :)

if someone loses their temper there they might not get out of their car in case the other person has a gun. even if you have a gun yourself it still makes you think twice about getting out of your car. in case the other person is more hot-headed than yourself

you don't stick your finger at people there in case they might have a gun. over all a lot of road rage in america appears to be suppressed due to the chance of the other person having a gun

    publicity stunt?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,034 ✭✭✭astraboy

Publicity stunt. Everyone knows most states of the US have liberal gun laws. Guns are legal there and easily available to a normal citizen. This is a good and a bad thing. People being able to protect themselves is a good thing, but people buying firearms as their first line of defense is not really a good idea. It does mean those that are involved in shooting sports can enjoy their sport without the ridiculous and often draconian laws we have in Ireland. Thats off topic anyway. As far as I can see giving away a gun with a car is not the best idea, but people still need to undergo a check by the relevant authorities so anyone that should not officially have a gun will not get one. If course once a person has a firearm its up to them to ensure they are trained in its use and safety and that they only use it when appropriate, ie like at a shooting range.

Only in America would this happen. Fortunately we have moved forward in the evolution process somewhat and are not as backward as those 3,000+ miles to the west of us.

I really can't believe that people are suggesting that guns should be legalised here.

As an aside I don't have a problem when country folk go out hunting and shooting, but really we don't need to go down the American route, they may have guns and they may be legal but just look at all the crime they have.

We should think of guns in the same way Americans think of diesel: ban it until we can see if it's any good(and as America shows it isn't and therefore should continue to be banned).

I want the right to bear arms since the law seems unable to offer me sufficient protection from assailants. I am inclined to agree that road rage might be much reduced by the thought that the other guy might have a gun and be prepared to use it. Totally off thread, but in this country we are supposed to retreat if someone is threatening us, even in our own homes. In the US, I understand, people put notices in their windows saying "Have gun and will use it." Such a notice in the rear window of my car might stop dipsticks tailgating me at least:cool:

Thing is guns are legal here. You need to be member of the hunting or target shooting community to own one however. Speaking as a person that enjoys shooting as a sport myself, some of the Irish laws are quite backward compared to our European neighbours. There is progress in this regard however. I don't think anyone that simply wants a firearm to keep at home should be allowed one, though the way this country is going you would think people will need one soon! American Gun policy in certain states is actually ok, not excessively liberal but not too draconian either. The issue lies with people getting access to firearms that have no clue what they are doing. Guns are dangerous only because of the fool holding it. That is what needs to be remembered. Anyway, off topic, the car sales place is just a publicity stunt that appears to be working!:D
