Where the hell did the slang "The John" and "The Jacks/Jax" originate from?

In Robin Hood;Men in Tights, Jean Luc Picard (whats his real name) returned and vanquished the baddie who was called John.

According Picard John's punishment was that every toilet would henceforth be reffered to as "The John".

    As for the others...dunno

This is historical FACT. And we all KNOW that men in tights was an accurate representation of that era. :D
