    Hi folks,

Just had a quick query on behalf of my sister here. She has a Macbook Pro and yesterday evening she said that the battery unit sort of expanded and then popped out at one side. Here is a picture attached.

Does anyone know what might have caused this? The laptop still appears to be working normally but could it potentially be damaging the laptop to continue using it? Finally, if the battery has gone to battery heaven, approximately how much woudl a replacement cost? I presume it woudl be a case of getting it from Apple directly.

    Many thanks.

How old is it? If under 12 months or you have an APP ring Apple Tech support and get them to send out a new one. Looks like heat has caused it. Prices are on the AppleStore for batteries if over 12 months.

The one thing that comes to mind that would cause a battery to swell like that is if there is contamination in the innards. If this is the case, there is something seriously bogey with the battery. Regardless of if the MBP is in warranty or not, contact Apple as a matter of urgency and run it by them.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have absolutely no idea whether or not there was contamination in the battery but I had suspected that as a possible cause. My sister said it just sort of popped out. She is a very light user of the Mac and it would sometimes sit for a few days completely switched off. She said it just popped out. She likened it to when you open a new jam jar and the security seal pops out to show that it has been opened. Very strange.

I'd stick that battery in a steal bin with no other materials in it for now. Or outside in same bin if possible.

If the insides have made it expand like that then it's well dodge.

If it's the plastics on the outside which have warped due to heat that's a bit less concerning but then the battery casing us generally designed to handle the max heat the battery should put out plus a few percent. So if this battery went well outside the operatiing temps then again, bin.

i'm pretty sure if you contacted apple and they seen that, they would be pretty quick in getting you sorted.

Don't think i've seen a apple laptop explode!

Expanding batteries are a sign of impending disaster. Potential fire / explosion type disaster! Batteries are basically controlled chemical reactions which this is clearly not. Take the battery out and dont charge it again. This is an example of an unattended MacBook left charging that obviously developed a fault.

Normally batteries are stable devices but when they go bad there is catastrophic possibilities. Plenty of exploding battery videos on the internet!!

Heres some general advice on care of LiPoly batteries.http://www.rchelisite.com/lipo_battery_charging_and_safety_guide.php

If its a LiIon battery heres further info.

to echo the advice given already.

Take the battery out.....put it somewhere isolated.......preferably somewhere non-reactive/flammable.

    Ring Apple immediately.

My friend has a MBP and his battery expanded, he had bought the MBP here and I'm not sure how long he had it when this happened, but I thought it was over a yr. I don't believe he had bought applecare either. Anyway this happened when he was on hols in the us, he went into the apple shop and they replaced the battery free of charge, no problem.

It's also possible you have one of the notorious exploding batteries made by Sony a couple of years back. Apple - and many other laptop manufacturers - did a complete recall on all of those effected batteries. My MBP was subject to this recall and I got a new battery within a few days.

This is the webpage of the recall and it's still in effect.

    Thank you very much sir!!

Just checked my sister's MBP's serial and model numbers on the battery and they fit in with what is asked for by the Apple website, so she'll be able to get sorted.

Don't ya just love a happy ending!!

    Kudos to you my friend.
