Presently I'm using a Fujifilm Finepix S602, its served me extremly well in the year's I've had her. But with the help of this forum (I'm a browser here) I've pretty much brought it to the limit of its abilities and now I'm thinking of upgrading to either an entry level DSLR like the D40 (very affordable for me) or the new Fujifilm S100.

Would there be a real advantage for me going over to a DSLR?.

And at DSLR entry level is the difference between the two just a matter of snobbery?.

With the DSLR over your old camera you will see a huge difference, initially in shutter lag, frame rate, higher ISO performance and total image quality.

From what I have read the FS100 is closer to the DSLR user experience but the lens displays some of the problems typical of extreme superzooms.

With the smallish difference in price between a true DSLR and the top bridge cameras my personal chioce would be a DSLR but it is a matter of personal choice and as somebody who has had a s602 you are well placed to make that choice.

For snobs there may be snobbery involved in the choice but most rational people will know that it is simply a matter of picking the best tool for the job.................

But certain brands are common as muck................;)

Thanks, although I read the dpreview site I somehow missed that.

I'm wondering if by sticking with another Fuji I'm just spending a lot of money and putting off the inevitable move to a DSLR, but my budget at the moment would be €600 (ish) and thats why I'm limited to an entry level camera like the D40 or secondhand higher spec camera.

Always an option given your budget though. Although to be honest i do love Fuji myself.

Defo go for the DSLR imo... An entry level DSLR will provide you with far more options next time you have some spare cash (although spare cash and photography don't co-exist :-)) to expand your kit. Dedicated Macro lens, dedicated wide angle lens, all kinds of mid range and telephoto zooms are an option. A cheap 50mm prime will help you learn more about photography than you'll ever learn with a bridge camera I think. Canon and Nikon both have cash back offers so tis the time to buy!
