so your in a shop at the deli counter, you tell them what you want on the sandwich, they make it, hand it tou tou, you walk over to the till, then somebody that has been handling everything from oil cannisters to fly-spray cannisters etc then takes your food back out of your hand to swipe it, then hands it back to you!

and what about the ones making the sandwiches.. hairnets barely holding back any stray hair.. not changing gloves after handling fish/then meat/then probably raw meat etc!

sometimes you just wander if anybody else in the shop wants to maul yer food!
(im talking about average spars/petrol stations etc)

anybody else get vexed by this?

Yeah it sucks, but I suppose thats what you get when you eat out. The amount of times I've gotten food poisoning from eating out...

In the shop near where I work (think it's a spar can't really remember though) they wrap the sandwhichs up after making them and I don't think they have any raw meat there.

Not really because they are generally wrapped, what does get me is going for a sandwich early in the morning and getting the sh*te fillings that were made up the day before and left in the fridge all night, i've had to throw away a few that were just rank. I knows what I likes and I likes my coleslaw fresh!

    What he said.

OP surely your sandwiches are wrapped before they're handed to you? And I'd say if it's a half-decent shop, there wouldn't be many hygeine issues.

BTW when I saw thread title, I thought the word "food" was used in the metaphorical sense. I'm disappointed :(

Its what you get for not making your own bloody sandwiches.

I always make my own, they're always awesome and Im the only one touching them.

aah, one of the shops i get me sandwiches in (its the same in a lot of them) the same people that are making the sandwiches are also handling the sausages and rashers etc fir the breakfast rolls.
its the fact that the food just gets thrown around the place (even if it is wrapped up) its like a relay race with a food baton!

The only ones I have a problem with are the ones where the same person takes your money and makes your sandwich

Unless the food is raw or you want a salad sandwich then I don't see the problem.

If there's poor hygiene then complain. I often request a new sandwich, juice, whatever, if the person serving has handled money or raw meat and not changed their gloves before handling whatever I'm about to be served.

Top garage in Kinsealey always (ALWAYS) open a bag and poke whatever is in it with their finger to see if you've hidden anything in with your croissant or are trying to sneak a muffin through as a ring donut.

Had the whole food poisoning from people not changing gloves or washing hands after handling money a few times and it sucks bloody ass.

Its not just your local deli counters but bigger places like subway also. The last time it happened in subway I asked the guy to make a new sub, in fairness he did and changed his gloves before hand. Skip forward a week or two and he was serving me again and he went and did the same thing, handle money, make a sub, never changing his gloves. This time I asked him to change the gloves before he made the sub (trying not to waste food)..... but no he just kept going with the gloves he had handled money with. Told him to keep the sub and walked out, so did a few others in the q.

Only thing to avoiud this is never have the people making the food handling money.

I worked in a deli years ago and if you saw what went on in some of them, you wouldn't eat in them.

Once, the freezer defrosted by accident and the boss just turned it back on and re-froze the contents even though they were half thawed. That was the day I left.

Well I'm sure if you explain to them that your a little prince they'll come along and handle it love and attention.

From your initial post you gave people the impression that they made up your sandwich and then gave it to you unwrapped. That would be annoying and unhygenic, BUT seeing as how they are handling the ingredients for the sandwich and then wrapping them in a deli I fail to see what you have to complain about. Really. If it bothers you that much make your own.

I'd imagine thats the case in ALL deli's. They're hardly frisbee-ing sambos across the counter to each other are they OP? Mountain out of a molehill, tbh.

Personally I think I've had food poisoning maybe 3 times in my life.

Dirt is good for you for godsake people, look at you all using keyboards/phones/anything people touch with their hand they're all manky dirty and never get disinfected and you haven't dropped dead yet.

What REALLY pisses me off is when deli staff wear gloves while preparing your food and then handle money with the gloves still on and then prepare food again for the next customer with same gloves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Im more a fan of the places that use hand sanitizer over gloves tbh.

In my local centra all the deli girls take their smoke breaks in the back leaning on the wheelie bins. What are the odds they wash there hands when they return to work

I did there a while back, but didn't like it and decided to come back to life again (it was very boring).

As for the rest, I am generally a big fan of close my eyes when they are preparing and just take and eat the food. I am also a firm believer in the 5 second rule (10 second rule if it is something really nice I dropped but want to eat).

    Germs schmerms.
