    WTF does this mean?

Do you still live at home?????

I found it hilarious when I was applying for a mortgage the amount of times I was asked this question.

    As opposed to what?
    The dustbin.........the street...............cardboard city??

Of course I live "at home" whether that home is bought, rented, shared it's still my home for my tenure there.

Why oh why does Ireland identify "home" as mammy and daddy territory?

Says a lot about us really.

WTF yourself  I don't see the problem with identifying "home" as the place you grew up in TBH. It's not really that hilarious.....

    I blame Seinfeld.

    Oh, and the Roma.

OP: It's the PC version of "Are you still sponging off mammy and daddy (i.e. "home"), ya wee little bastardin' sponge?"

    What Karoma said in #7

...except the roma bit, why is that being dragged around like a dead cat.

really laugh away, i've lived in other countries and apart from Ireland I've only ever been asked a straightforward question like my address, never "do you live at home"

Just reading the other thread reminded me of this.:)

In Ireland, "home", in that context, means "with your parents". What's not straightforward about that?

The same reason that parents use slang terms that they hate their kid(s) using.

carolman: it's Ireland; we like indirect questions.

It is really a stupid question to put on a mortage application when you think about it. Why not just ask if you're a first time buyer?

This is a nicer, softer, indirect lead up to asking "how much do you spend on rent?"

Sorry, I didn't read the roma thread because the title shouted race bashing.

I've obviously missed something as there seem to be references to it creeping in everywhere.

Back on topic - nothing to see here.

I didn't mind that question but I found the prostate exam to be odd.

    And another thing.
Over the past week, I've been travelling up and down the N2.

Now, I don't get out too much and others may have noticed this before, but why do crow walk across the road?
They have wings and can fly, but choose to walk.

    I don't under stand it.

I keep seeing dead crows on the road and I know they would have survived had they flown across the road instead of walking.

    Crows are idiots.

Ireland - land of the eternal offspring!

I was 35 and a mother to a 7 year old when I got my mortgage, both my parents are dead and yet I was still asked "do you live at home"

Obviously my "home" with my son wasn't what they meant.:)
