    hi all

new amp on the way in a few weeks, my attention has now changed to upgrading my axe. currently playing an eipi LP, which i like, but i have pretty small fingers, and im finding it hard to play fast. The problem is the neck being too fat. One of my mates has a squire strat which i have no problem playing the strat, and im getting to like them!

what would yer opinions be of this mex strat? i have been assured by a guy at thomann that the neck is thinner then my LP!

that's a lot of dough for a mex strat.

keep an eye on adverts as american strats often go on there for 700-750.

you get a lot more for your money second hand

USA strats even cheaper on ebay or over from UK.

    Try www.gak.co.uk or www.dolphinmusic.co.uk
Cheaper than Thomann at the moment because of the weaker ££££

You could get a USA Strat for that kind of cash from them.

    €430 + €33 p&p

    €734 + €33 p&p USA Strat

    Hey Frankcarty.

I used to use an Epiphone Flying V guitar. I found the neck too wide and it was impossible to play sitting down. Kinda bought it on a mad impulse one day when I decided to learn guitar. Was playing bass and keyboards for a few years and had gigged around. I got a 2004, 50th Anniversary edition Strat USA in metallic 'candy apple red' when they came out and trust me. I'd never change it. You will find that it will take a little bit of getting used to (at least in my case it did) because the pickups are a lot better than the likes of entry level guitars through to mid range guitars, and it may feel a little too responsive to your playing than (say) a Squier Strat or an Encore. At the minute I'm using a Roland Cube 30 in the garage and when and if I play at a bar or whatever I've got an old battered Roland JC60 from the early neolithic era. Even without any effects, a Fender Stratocataster in decent condition will give you a wealth of sounds by just using the tone knobs. I can get pretty much any clean sound I want from a semi acoustic sound to a fairly decent Telecaster sound that's particularly good for country & western if you're into that sound. If the action is good, (the distance from the strings to the fretboard along the neck), it will stay good. I'd highly recommend my one to you but I'm keeping it I'm afraid.

As has already been said, you should have no problem getting a good deal on a new one but don't be afraid of the secondhand market either. Fender USA guitars are quite a sought after item and when anybody gets one they usually take great care of it. Take note of the kind of case that a secondhand guitar comes in though. If it's been in a gig bag and has been gigged, it might be a bit knocked about. Look out for a hard/flight case and if it's a Fender original, chances are it came with the guitar.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Good luck with the hunt for the perfect guitar. A Fender Strat will never let you down though. Especially a red one. :)

Why not head into the bricks and mortar stores and try a few guitars. Ibanez guitars have some beautiful necks

Theres some great strats on adverts atm, had my eye on a G&L Legacy for around that price which imo would be alot higher quality then a mex fender. There is also a US fender strat with a beautiful finish going for about 700.

Take a very good look at advers, its amazing some of the equipment you can get at low prices!

    That's a good point Onkle.

OP I've had a lash off an Ibanez or 3 over the years and I can vouch for their playability. The tuning system on any of the ones I've played is different to a standard strat though. Might have to check out how it works. Any of the lads I know though that have an Ibanez would swear by them. I prefer the strat myself but I've heard some of the lads gigging with Ibanez and they sounded great.

I just wanted to say I played a 335-type guitar for years, which didn't have a particularly wide neck, but when I switched to a strat I found it a whole lot easier to play, much more comfortable. And I have small hands.

The strat you linked to looks like one of the best of the Mexicans, the pickups are good quality and IMO should be a match for most US strats (love those pearly gates!). I can't vouch for the overall build quality of the guitar, though I'm sure it will be better than the Squier you played.

Personally I just love the feel of a maple fretboard on a strat rather than the rosewood.

Be careful, a lot of strats being sold at the moment as "US strats" which aren't proper "American Series" strats. Have a look on adverts and you'll see a sizeable amount of strats being called "American" which aren't, for example that fella who bumped his Mexican 70's strat a few times a day claiming it consisted of American parts. Bull****, unless he forgot to add "Central" before "American".
