Have you got one ? is it any good ?, it seems to have a bad rep round these parts and the general consensus is it ends up as a paper weight, is this fair ? how is it in comparison to the DS ?

It's really not a bad portable machine, I just think for me a DS is a far better machine with better games and with an R4 can do a lot of what the PSP can do.

Saying that if you do get a PSP you certainly won't be disappointed. While the decent games were drip fed on to the machine in between dreadful ports that didn't work without dual analogue it now has a pretty impressive catalogue of unique and excellent games (loco roco is just wonderful).

Get yourself some custom firmware and you'll open up an even bigger range of possibilities.

I got a PSP on launch and I have only got 3 games. It is not a great games console. It is okay for multimedia though but for games I think the DS is better.

Have you looked at the pro's and con's of both the PSP and the Nintendo DS? I favoured a PSP myself and have not been disappointed. Granted there isn't exactly a sea of amazing games but there is more than enough for the average gamer. It has excellent multimedia playback and if you have a PS3 it's a marraige made in heaven.

Reading various articles since the release of the PS3 it seems that the PSP is experiancing something of a second wind with sales picking up.

The psp is a great machine but only if its hacked. Out of the box its just average.

However there have been some amazing games released lately (patapon, god of war, crisis core). I think its finally hitting its stride, albeit a year too late!

what does hacking it involve ?

Hacking involves downgrading the firmware of the PSP using some convoluted means and then installing a custom homebrewed firmware. The method of doing this depends on what firmware is on your PSP but there are dozens of really good tutorials online detailing how to do this.

Yes I would say that's fair , thats how it went for me anyway , bought one at launch and it got used for about a month , after about 6 months of it doing nothing but gathering dust I gave it to my nephew , and even he doesnt like it , he prefers the nintendo.

For me and for the nephew , its the short battery life that's the showstopper.

Got one, and then waited a year before hacking it. There are homebrew applications out there that go from the ridiculous to the sublime.

Recently added a .txt and .pdf reader to it so I can add a f*ck load of books for my travels. I know nothing can replace the smell and feel of having a good book in your hands........oh look at me prattle on!

Actually have to mention the battery life. It really is ridiculously short for a handheld.

Seconded! Forgot to mention that too! I'd say it'll last a movie, maybe two at a push. (It takes .mp4's) It seems more of an "adult" handheld though. The way you can put music, movies and photo's on there. Also with the newest firmwares you'll be able to (with the new external camera) make video calls.

Not so much anymore. Sony released a newer battery which has much better life. It comes out of the box for new slims and can be bought separately for fats.

I can easily get 6 hours of direct gaming on it!

which to be honest is still pretty piss poor. It would need to be charged at the very least once a week if used regularly and after 6 months the battery life would have been reduced to about 3 hours which is dreadful especially if using 333mHz games. What annoyed me the most about my psp was that it always ran out of battery on the journey into college, the low battery warning giving you about 5 mins of playtime before the thing turned off. happened constantly and I found a good book was far better than an unpredictable PSP.

Boooornnnssss. Your being dramatic. OK the battery life isn't amazing, but it really isn't that bad. Considering what you get and how powerful the PSP is it's bearable. If the battery life is that much of an issue for some then why not get a second one and have it charged.

Because I really shouldn't have to with a console marketed as 'portable'.

Ahh now come on you can't have your cake and eat it too. With the nature of it's hardware and the wealth of multimedia features there has to be a trade off somewhere. I've brought mine to poland about a dozen times and never had an issue with the battery life. I play it for several hours and then charge it when I'm done ready for the next trip somewhere.

It is what it is. I had thought about a DS but the PSP was a more attractive purchase for me. I knew the battery life wasn't the best but figured I could live with it's limitations and I can.

Thats where the beauty of sleep mode comes in!! When the battery gives a warning you just do a quick power off to put into sleep mode and resume next time you charge.

I do love sleep mode but it still means you are without your psp until it is charged again.
