    Or is the 'character building' idea a myth we propagate to feel better about adversity?

    Yes it does, the more you have to deal with the more coping strategies you can develop that will be of use in your entire life. At least that is the hope I cling to.

    Worked on my in school. got the crap beaten out of me for years and followed it up to win some national martial arts titles and become this shining example of humanity you see before you :D

    I'd say it does. One of the main reasons we evolved to where we are as far as i know.

    My ma believes it anyway. Many a time she's quipped "what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger".

    Makes some people stronger but messes up others imo

    albeit, 'others' who are already weak minded/spirited

    It does up to a point, theres only so much bollix and knock backs one person can take before they are broken.
    Its all relative.

    Depends on the person imo.

    I'd agree with Cunny Funt, it does depend on the person, some people can overcome adversity, others can't. Speaking personally I have overcome some tremendous stuff and it has made me so strong, but also now the good times are rolling in so it makes me tremendously grateful I cannot get over how lucky I am right now, its fantastic, so adversity can really make you appreciate the good times as well, a double bonus.

    I suppose it also depends on the adversity too.

    @McGinty

    That's nice to hear.

    "What does kill you can leave a ****ing great scar!"

    Anyways, yeah, it does. When i was a kid and all depressed about lords knows what i was probably pretty weak willed, lacking all kinds of stuff you need to get through life. Hit my later years and some honesty to god **** i wouldn't have anyone go through and came out it all the better.

    Who knew!
