Staying in Washington DC in September for a couple of nights.

Any recommendations on somewhere decent to stay which is relatively near the main attractions?

Any info which would be useful to someone who has not been to Washington DC before would be gratefully received....cheers

central washington DC is very expensive accommodation wise, the harrington hotel is probably the cheapest in central DC and is decent, its only a 2-3 blocks from the White house http://www.hotel-harrington.com/

90% of DC's main sites are located in between the Lincoln Memorial in the west, the Capitol Building in the East, dupont circle in the north and Jefferson memorial in the south

thats still a very large area to cover and i suggest walking, its easy to get around DC and very little chance of getting lost, public transport isn't great

Book your tickets for the Washington monument BEFORE arriving in DC, you can do this online otherwise the queue will be a mile long http://www.nps.gov/wamo/

Weekends in DC are very quiet, don't trek east or north of Union Station/Capitol Building as all that area is ghetto central, cental DC is very safe, ghetto DC is most certainly not

Thanks for the Washington DC info.

You won't know anywhere decent to stay in New York?

    Cheers

chelsea lodge is the best rated budget hotel in NY on tripadvisor http://www.chelsealodge.com/

last time in NY we stayed at the comfort suites in north bergen about 3 miles from manhattan, lovely hotel (huge beds) and quality you will pay 5 times the price for on the island, however getting to and from the hotel was a pain, the NY cabs drivers don't have a clue once they leave manhattan http://www.comfortsuites.com/ires/en-US/html/HotelInfo?hotel=NJ138&promo=gglocal

you can also try the NY megathread sticky at the top of this page, i am sure there is loads of accommodation advice, expect to get a small boxy room if staying in manhattan and not paying $500+ a night

There is a Jurys Hotel on Dupont Circle in DC. Might be worth checking out.

    I stayed here before - http://www.washingtonplazahotel.com/
Grand hotel. Outdoor pool too (if you are going when teh weather will be good) Got a deal through Expedia. About 5 min walk from Dupont Circle.

    Good shopping here - http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=157
