    Hi all

Maybe you guys can help me come up with a good holiday destination...

I want to go on holidays for about 2 weeks in August - I had originally wanted to go to Croatia but flights are amlost €300 from Dublin at an early hour in the morning which would mean adding on an overnight stay in Dublin and long term parking fees. The odds are just stacking up against this holiday really. I tried to go into a travel agent yesterday for a bit of advice and he sent me home telling me to decide what hotel I want, for what dates and he'll check availability! I can do this myself for God's sake, I wanted a bit of advice!!!

Anyway at this stage I'm toying with the idea of Italy (flights still working out over about €200) or New York (I'll have free accommodation).

Could anyone suggest somewhere nice for me!! I'm trying to go from Shannon and would really still love to do Croatia but I think it would mean going through a travel agent. seeing as I couldn't get advice from them yesterday, has anyone gone to Croatia from Shannon and could advise of a nice hotel/area to go to...

trying to get a holiday for that price is going to be tough, especially in august. builders holiday-the prices always go up. if you have accomadition sorted in ny go there. 49$ for greyline hop on hop off bus tours. this brings you all over the city. day and evening. the comedy shows are good and eating out is reasonably priced. whoever your stayin with should know the best spots to try.

I'm shocked the travel agent wasn't more helpful.
They normally love it when you sucker them for free advice and then go off and book by yourself.

I wasn't looking for free advice. I'm quite happy to book with a travel agent. In the past it hasn't worked out that much more expensive. If I get good advice from them and they're helpful, I'll happily book with them, if not I won't

Also a travel agent shouldn't be assuming people will book online themselves, surely they should just be nice to customers and which might encourage to book through them.

well if you are still interested , go to italy. you should get a cheap flight from shannon to venice. Try ryanair, i know they definetely do venice & maybe milan. Venice is an amazing city, cant reccomend it enough !! & i think you can even get a hydrofoil to somewhere in croatia, so it would be worth checking out.

New York in August can be quite hot and oppressive, in fact that's the time of year when New Yorkers try and get out of the city themselves!

What's your overall budget for the holiday and are you flexible about when you can go?

I would lean towards Croatia, it may be a bit more expensive to fly there, but you would probably spend less once you are there.

We want to stay in a decent hotel if we go to Croatia and a package is looking like €1500 for the two weeks (each). This would be well over €2000 if we booked flights and same hotel seperately.

I'm afraid in Italy that it's going to be too hot to do the city thing which was our plan: Rome -> Florence -> Venice. Pricewise it's looking like we'd be spending €1000 on flights and accommodation so overall I'd say it'll work out more than Croatia.

Flights to America just keep going up and up so I think that's probably out by now! Could've gotten what I wanted last week for €610 and it's now €760!! Oh well, I guess that just knocks off an option and makes decision makign a little easier.
