My poor 86 BMW sport was hit at a roundabout by an uninsured driver on Tuesday night, who then drove off, he was caught and arrested and admitted his liability. Its with the assesors now... I think its dead!!

    That sucks! :(

But it looks like body damage only. Are your insurance co saying it's not worth repairing?

How did the guy get caught - did you chase him?

That's a real shame. It looks dead to me. Damage is more than just that side panel. Are/were you very attached to it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 610 ✭✭✭green-blood

it was my baby...but it was also for sale (isn't everything) and I had a guy lined up from the E30 world to take it Wed AM

I cannot fathom them repairing it - panel and wing, wheel, I think the trailing arm is bent, door pillar is gone so thats a lot of strength, inner panels, the inner seatbelt mount on the pannager side is moved, the door wont open, the sill is gone, the kit is damaged, new tyre, paint and labour... and my ABS light is now on!!

2 girls got the plate number and came back to teh scenwe, one other guy followed him (the car was badly damaged, light, wing, bonnet, he was obvioulsy lost and went down a dead end of a country road, gardai got him there.

97 corolla, wine, saloon. Non national uninsured, no tax!!

Sucks even more now, will you have to go through the insurance board route to claim against an uninsured driver?

    Mike.

Damn! I feel for you man, I got a few light scrapes on the door of my 2002tii and I was gutted...

Nice BBS alloys there - have the same on my machine. You may be breaking it for parts... What's the engine size/condition?

  • Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 11,183 Mod ✭✭✭✭MarkR

Contact the motor industry address board (is that what it's called?), but it takes a while.

You could try breaking it for parts depending on the condition of the interior and how hard those bits are to come by.

    At least you're ok!

none of that heartache thanks goodness.

I'm comp with AXA - they sort me out and then persue the Uninsured fund, I wont be hit for any NCB either

Ah noooooo! Jaysus Brian thats awful dude :(:(

We got off lightly when Johnny Non-national went into the back of the mini,
we ended up getting some cash (not enough to cover the lot) but it was nowhere as bad as that.

Really hope it works out dude :(

I wouldn't mind if you mention the nationality of the driver. It would be interesting to get some statistics going here...

I have now, thanks for that, never saw that site before.

Thats really bad luck mate, sorry to see that, but it could have been worse.

Someone could have been hurt, you or your family, and at least, thanks to those folks on the scene.

The fact is it CAN be fixed, but it is down to getting sensible estimates and ensuring the cars value has been set high enough. If they write it off you may be able to buy it back and fix it, I know a really good bodyshop very familiar with E30's, they've two in there at the moment. PM me if you want details, its on the northside BTW.

    hey

If they write it off (fingers crossed) and if I can getit back, its for breaking, I wouldn't be bothered repairing, there are good 316 shells out there and the parts are worth plenty

no news yet, I have to return the crappy hire car as it has an awful shake over 70KPH so I hope to pick some brains this evening

I wouldn't reshell it just for that !

Its only a 1/4 panel, sill/pillar repair and possibly a few more hours here and there, plus some suspension work.

    No big deal.

Re-shelling a car is a huge amount of work plus it'll never have the same value !

Hope that engineers report is positive...

well BMW parts prices for what they can see come to €3500 so I've to get a call today with a write off price. good news is I canget the scrap back.

Personally I dont like the idea of a repair where 2 structural parts are damaged beside each other - sill and pillar. But as i said above tehre is more damage you cannot see, the passanger side seatbelt mount is moved, that door wont open, the inner shut is mangaled, it needs a wheel, tyre (BMW charge 300 a wheel!!) and there is rear suspension damage, he hit the wheel first.

Everything is repairable eventually of course, but not at insurance rates.
