    that would be me.

make it clear in the original posting..........and it wasn't obvious, not at all.

Surely fairly obvious when I'm a regular poster in the Mac section and I post it there! Not rocket science.

NEC drives are excellent for this purpose

i just tested the xbox hd-dvd drive thats selling for a tenner if you can find it, it plays my region 1 dvds now that my dvd is stuck to region 2.

This is probably pathetically obvious and I apologise if it is but VLC lets you play DVDs from any region. No messing about with new disc drives or complex hacks.

yeh but it dvd player ejects the dvd when the region is wrong, is there a way to stop that?

Exactly - the VLC thing doesn't work; I have DVDs set to 'ignore' if a DVD is loaded, but the Macbook still changes the region reflexively.

Thanks, Babypink; I'll take a look for an NEC external DVD-R.

Christ, forgot about the 360 HD-DVD.

Anyone still see them for sale? Might pick one up for the laugh!

Hi, slightly OT, but can you use the 360 hd-dvd drive without plugging it into an xbox console? Can it be plugged direct to a mac/pc, and does it stick to a region after 5 plays of dvd's?

There is a documented method of playing DVDs which bypasses the region tester, but I just couldn't get it to work, myself. Not that I have much use for physical DVDs anymore, but I wouldn't mind avoiding a commitment to a specific region...

Hey kevteljeur, could you put a link to the documented method your talking about or tell us more about this?

Gerard, maybe your Macs are already region-freed? Or maybe they have an older drive?

well it used to happen with my powerbook too so i dont think it is a case of an older drive.

Also works fine on my Mac Mini (bought new in late 2007).

    Have a look at this:

Which could do with some refinement apparently:

Thankfully VLC is a lot more stable than it used to be...
