    • avoid the reading room at all costs.
    • IT building for the best coffee.
    • never eat food from the canteen. friars in the north campus is probably best value.
    • don't bring a car; bike is much faster to get around Galway and parking is a bitch on campus.
    • student accommodation is overpriced

Oh that last one is something I need to know more about. If student accomadation is overpriced where should I be looking? I don't really want to be in a "party house" or whatever, but would like to be fairly close to the uni. possible?

best bet would be to get a copy of the advertiser and have a look in the ads there i suppose, i'm living at home in Galway at the moment so someone here who's been through it all will probably be able to advise you better. it depends how far out you're willing to go i guess. you can get decent houses in some decent estates that would be say 20 minutes from campus walking, or there are a few decent apartments in town too. as a masters student as opposed to an undergrad there will be more options available to you anyway; i know a few who've gotten rooms in decent places living with professionals as opposed to students, which suited them down to the ground.

area names; Newcastle is where the college is located. can find quite a few places around there. Shantalla wouldn't be too far either, although i'm sure how much accommodation can be gotten around there. fair few live in Westside, but i'd say avoid, a lot of the accommodation is crap. Daingean wouldn't be too far from campus, but is a bit far from the town. then across the bridge you've got the likes of Castlelawn heights, or anywhere along the dyke road. then of course there is the town centre area itself...

Dont know much about accom myself except all my siblings stayed on campus, it was mad but they loved it. Congrats on your acceptance btw :)

    Try Dun Na Coirbe maybe.

Really close to college and not too far from town. Houses are pretty alright too. But do not mix up Dun na Coirbe with Cuirt or Gort which are more aimed at 1st/2nd years

Get the advertiser as Leninbenjamin says. Its out at 3pm on Wednesday online, and the paper itself is out on thursday.

Recently ive seen a few rooms going in Foster court, its right in the middle of town (beside the bus/train station, but not too close), and about 10mins walk from college. Not too badly priced as far as i can remember.

Places to look out for are:
    Prospect hill
    Bohermore
    Newcastle
    Shantalla
Dominic street (if you havn't got a car)
    Foster Street

    Foster Court
    Corrib Park
    Moyola park
Ardilan road (although I believe the places in there arnt the best, from my experience)
    Cill ard
Dun, Gort and cuirt na coiribe

Thats all i can think of at the mo. You will see alot of Knocknacarra, renmore and Doughiska, but there not close to college at all so dont be tempted by their low low prices.

Cheers for all the help people. What is a reasonable price for rent in Galway these days?

Ranging from 70 - 110 a week for decent places. Student Accomodation like Coribe village or Gort na coiribe are about 95 to 110 a week. Places in the city center can be about 90 to 110, depending on your room. Give yourself a 5-10 min walk to town and you might drop to 75-100. Theres always the exceptions though, above and below these guides.

Im in a lovely house just behind Tescos for 75 a week so I guess i got lucky. Shop around really, i gave myself about 2-3 weeks to find a place, didnt want to rush and end up with some dive of a place.

    Remember,
    400 a month isnt 100 a week, over the course of a 52 week year is 92euro a week.
    375 a month is 83euro a week.
    etc

    Happy house hunting.

    Cheers lads.
My cousin has just moved to Galway recently so I might go visit her again in a week or two. Is there much in the way of accomadation? In Maynooth it could be fairly hard to find a place, especially a good house.
