    Yes.

    In places where there is no Irish consulate/ embassy then Irish citizens can make use of the UK ones. The same applies the opposite was round as well but I'm not sure there are any places where Ireland has an embassy but the UK does not.

    So if there's an Irish consulate (and it's bloody closed) and there's a UK embassy an irish Passport Holder wouldn't be able to use it?

    From far as I know you need an Irish embassy. Don't know the country you are going to though. They should have an Irish embassy somewhere.

    To what end Random? The British Consulate is there for you in times of emergency or what have you. When you say the Irish one is closed do you mean they no longer have a presence in the country you refer to or is it a case that they are all out at lunch or whatever, not sure what you mean...

    Example:

    Irish gov website says that when in Albania you should contact the Irish Embassy in Greece. clicky

    British gov website says that they will assist any EU or Commonwealth national that does not have local representation in Albania. clicky

    I cannot find the page at the moment but it defiantely does specifically mention that UK/ Irish embassies can be used by citizens of either somewhere on both governments websites. However, they both seem to not want to publicise the fact that they might not have ther own representation everywhere by the looks of it.

    If there is an Irish embassy in that country though and it's closed then I suspect that they will turn you away at the UK one.

    Man ..Albania could be.
    Some work colleagues were there to help them in the telecommunication company and they said the country is a little bit f....up. Dunno if you find an Irish embassy in there.
    From far as a know they have around 90 postpaids and the rest prepaids. :p
    Good luck in there !

    What do you want to use it for? When I was in Belarus there was no Irish embassy. The Irish embassy in Moscow took care of everything (e.g. if Belarusians needed visas for Ireland they would have to go there, not to the UK one in Minsk). However, I knew if there was some emergency I could go to the UK embassy,don't ask me what type, I'm just saying this is what I was told. I met some guy who worked at the UK embassy and he told me I should register with them, so if something happened, they'd have a seat on the getaway bus for me!! Are you looking for something specific or you just want to know in general?

    I'm wondering in general really ... given I try to do a bit of travelling every year it's nice to know these things.

    I guess if an Irish person is in trouble then any English speaking embassy would be at least willing to give assistance ...

    ++ edit
    Just noticed VanHeusens link.
