renting a road bike in Dublin

Does anyone know if you can rent a road bike for a week in Dublin (or Limerick for that matter)? I'm coming home for 10 days and considering taking my bike with me. However with the charges and potential for losing / breaking the bike I was wondering if there are alternatives.

[I did a search and it threw up a very old thread]

CycleWays rent a city bike. Maybe they can direct you to someone who would rent a road bike.

    http://www.phoenixparkbikehire.com/

Their website seems to only quote for hourly rates & give a "whole day" rate as well - I'm sure they'd do you a deal if you wanted to take it for a few days.

I remember a couple of years ago there was a shop outside cycleways in town that was renting all kind of bikes ... or you can do like most of 'these lads like you know' do ... get a big ... get a big cable cutter ...

( sorry I had to :pac:)

They don't?? Their website says they do...
Our bikes are all, 'Giant', made in Holland, and in perfect mechanical order. We have a range from kiddies bikes, to ladies mountain bikes, hybrids, tag-alongs, baby seat, baby carriers, all the way to carbon fibre racing bikes, (for the more hard core of you out there).

You're right! I rang Cycleways and they didn't but I just looked at the pics on the Phoenix Park site and guess that they didn't do them.

I just rang them and a road bike is 130E for the week. Not a bad price I guess (although the car I am renting for the week is cheaper :) ) Now have to decide if the baggage charge + hassle > bike rent

    Thanks Aidan.

Bringing the bike over and back will probably cost in the region of €50-60 depending on the airline. What sort of bike is it? I'd consider it if it wasn't carbon. Otherwise I'd definately rent.

Would you have means to get it to the airport with all your stuff and then to wherever you need to go the other end?

Yea car at both ends + it's an 800E aluminium bike so it's going in the hold :-)

I'd certainly consider it in that case, it will be your own bike that is set up the way you like it. On the other hand there is an undeniable element of hassle and you will only be saving in the region of €70. Where are you flying from and with who? I've brought my aluminum bike abroad a few times without major drama, just had to turn the bars in line with the frame. Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus have been fine.
