How far south does the northern freeview signal get? Is it possible to get reception from Dublin?

if you have a VERY big pole.

Really Satellite has made UK terrestrial reception a minority sport any further than Dundalk.

More channels and easier. Only really Five missing of importance now C4 is FTA.

Be nice if CH4 HD went FTA for the non subscribers.

At the moment the ERP of the digital signal is still quite low (compared to analogue) so getting a workable signal in the capital would well nigh on impossible. I'm in south Down (about 20 K's NE of Newry) and the signal where I am is poor, anything less than a 'SetPal' tuner and masthead amp is a waste of time/money. As Watty says, satellite has made DTT redundant in fringe/poor signal areas. In the end I gave in and switched to satellite, I still have the terrestrial STB (Daewoo 608SP) connected up to the DVD recorder and would use it the odd time I want to record something on Five or one of the other UK channels that are not on the irish EPG. Though the recordings are often ruined by local electrical interference interrupting the data flow.

Will reception of Divis DTT improve after the 2012 analogue switchoff? Also will relays such as Camlough and Kilkeel be converted to DTT? Thinking of those who can't get satellite (trees, buildings etc). Don't people down the east coast to north co. Dublin get analogue reception from Kilkeel at the moment? Will they get a DTT signal too?

Well, it is very much obtainable on a FTA receiver... but I don't think I can go into specifics here about how you go about getting it....!

Some info. on Divis DSO here - http://www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=IJ287750. Seems DSO is actually 2013. Good news about power increases though. Also some info. on Kilkeel here - http://www.ukfree.tv/shutdowndetail.php?tx=IJ281180. Guess that Divis with all available multiplexes and major increase in power is best bet for Freeview along east coast for those in ROI.

Having read some of the info from those links it would seem that most of the local relays will carry only the 3 PSB multiplexes! So no Sky Sports News, E4, More 4, ITV2, 3 , etc. This makes Freesat look more like the option to go for when switching to digital, unless you're in an area served by a main transmitter. Certainty new TV's will have a DVBt tuner built in and if you can get a few terrestrial channels via that means well and good, but for those looking for the full range of services, once again satellite looks like the more efficient option.

Based on Arqiva's Reference Offer for the DTT switchover, Kilkeel's ERP will only be 2dB lower than existing analogue levels and will operate on Chs 42, 45 and 49. I think Divis switchover (and therefore Kilkeel) is earlier than the rest, possibly at the end of 2012.

Totally agree with this. I live only about 15 miles as crow flies from Divis but I suffer breakup on the multiplex carrying Sky News/Sky Sports News etc due to foliage in summer. Have a 27 element aerial with booster and still get breakup! This led me to go down satellite route and I haven't looked back since! Perfect reception, more interactive options and all regions meaning I'm not stuck with BBC NI or UTV all the time!
