Can anyone offer advice on the likely causes of poor fuel economy with regard to problems with the fuel system [ie. as opposed to the usual factors like heavy right foot, air con etc. etc.]

I've a 00 Accord 1.8 VTEC which while not being an especially economical engine in the first place, is certainly draining the tank far too quickly - €60-65 ~= 280 miles

Somebody suggested taking it to a specialist garage re. a diagnostic hook-up [Seamus McGrath's, Limerick City] to trouble-shoot exactly where its all going wrong - anybody have experience or advice here, would be greatly appreciated :)

P.S. Its been suggested to me that the 2 Litre engine would have been a better choice as they give better economy due to being better suited to this model - any opinions ???

While the fuels prices might be giving a inaccurate slant on things, a full tank on my 2002 1.8 VTEC gets me just over 350 miles or so.

    I have a 00 2.0 auto Accord V-tec, and a full tank does me for 280-300 miles,
nearly all of my driving is short hops - my commute is only 5miles each way. On country runs (mainly m-way) i get around 350-360 from a full tank.

VTECs can be quite thirsty, I remember a few of them from my driving history. OP (and others) it would be a lot easier if we knew what economy your getting in terms of mpg or l/100 km. I reckon from your own figures you're getting just over 20 mpg, which is very low for a 1.8, but VTECs are thirsty, and you may need to adjust your driving style.

By comparison, I bought a Mazda Xedos 9 2.5 V6 auto. It does 22 mpg around town, and 26 ish on a run.

By that stick, your car sounds very thirsty for a 1.8 VTEC manual. It should probably be giving you high twenties for town, and mid thirties on a run.

The 2.0 may have been better suited, but the 1.8 is a powerful engine too, you shouldn;t have to work it that hard!
