Well, .......

For some reason I get really annoyed by the following (largely American) forum mannerism; going 'Well, ' needlessly the start of any sentence when making a point. I think it's because it has a slightly patronising and self aggrandizing ring to it.

That's all, just wondered if I was the only one.

T'is quite common in the north east, Dundalk area particularly... starting a sentence with "WELL!" and ending it with ", HEY?".

"Well! What's the craic, hey?" and so on...

I'm not saying its RIGHT, it's just not strictly American.

When I'm down the country I always start off a conversation (not a sentence) with Well.

    But I say it like:

    Well...?

Its like sayin how are ya, or howya.

I like don't mind it, but, like what I find irritating is people like using the word like excessively and like totally coming across as a annoying Californian teenager, like.

Well, saying "well?" to substitute for "hello, how's it going, any news?" is a fair common saying in Tipperary like!! It's fair lousy of you to start picking on well:p

Well now why would you think that was just an American thing?!

Well is definitely a country thing, not American. It's done round parts of Mayo and Roscommon too. Myself and a mate are always doing it from habit which hugely confuses some of the foreign guys that work with use.

I also think the like thing being solely American is a lie. I remember it being said in "like, ya know, like" way when I was growing up well before the influence of Friends and the OC. I understand that it can be used in a D4 way which is incredibly annoyingly American but the excessive use of like was an Irish thing before that
