Had a few segments of garlic that sprouted in the fridge so planted them in the window box beside some chives.

    Anyone know what will happen?

They seem to be growing happily - will they grow into new garlic cloves?

Planting some cloves from vegetable shop garlic will be ok, it will grow, but it will not grow correctly. They are usually planted in autumn as the bulbs need the cold of the winter to encourage them to split into new garlic bulbs. With late planted garlic you'll probably find that you'll get one large bulb, instead of many split bulbs.
It wont be as usable in the kitchen.

Yeah I found this problem with garlic planted in early April, I took a chance. Checked it the other day and nothing had happened. So took it all out and dumped it, have scallions in now instead.

I planted elephant garlic for the first time this year, well, I planted them in October actually. They are now fairly much waist high and look like huge leeks! Hopefully at the end of the summer I'll have massive bulbs of elephant garlic :D

I know a couple of people that have grown perfect garlic from 'Tesco' garlic ~ but obviously they planted them before winter. Give them another try at the end of the summer. I'm growing potatoes this year from Tesco potatoes and they seem great so far. I had bought them to eat and they started to grow before I got to them so no loss to me if they don't grow..

    Thanks for the replies.

I planted it just to see what would happen!

I planted 4, one died and the other 3 seem happy.

If I leave there till next year will it yield anything?

Only one way to find out.

Beware it grows very tall... not sure garlic is window box material.

I've grown garlic from tesco bulbs before but it may have been tesco "grown in Ireland" garlic which would have helped. Autumn planting best as already said but no harm in a bit of experimentation!

    How tall? - it's only a small pot.

Whatever you do, don't grow it in flower-beds. It spreads like wildfire and has to be dug out forever.

I only found that with wild garlic (which is a right nuisance). Garlic garlic is perfectly easy to control in my experience. I could just be lucky.

2-3 ft I'd say (though my memory could be exaggerating that). The leaves get quite thick.
