.... I'm just curious if anyone else has a medical card and could answer this question. I've just got a med card and there awhile ago I was given a six month continuing presciption. Is there a different process with getting the meds with the card? Do I have to go back to the doc or can I just go to the pharmacy with the prescription and the card to fill it? Thanks in advance.

You have to have a hospital script converted by your GP to a GMS script to be able to receive your medicines on the medical card. However, you can present any script to pharmacy with your medical card to receive one weeks "emergency supply" which gives you a little time to arrange an appointment with your GP to have the correct script issued that is valid for up to 6 months.

I assume you have a doctor's private prescription form, they are not valid for the med card. You will have to get it rewritten on a medical card form (the green single ones or the square multipage ones).

Thanks guys, may go in tomorrow then if that's the case. Only 4 days left in my current box. Cutting it a bit tight!

Pharmacists are allowed to dispense emergency supply of medicine to patients without a script as well provided they are not controlled drugs or antibiotics (there is a schematic and a class group they are allowed to do this for).

For example if you take a pain medicine constantly and have normally a 6 month script, vice versa for blood pressure, diabetes medicines etc.... you can get a short supply if you do get stuck to tide you over for an urgent appointment within a few days to see a GP.
