It was a stupid attempt by RTE to cash in on one of their own and it failed dismally. I'm ecstatic!

Word on the street is that we go out of our way not to win the competition but give the public the illusion that we aspire to win by sending one of the biggest selling 'artists' in Ireland to the contest.
Or by sending artists the the public has voted for on talent contests.

Apparently, the cost and effort of hosting the event after winning is too much, when we won it a few times in a row it put a big dent in someones budget.

You're not alone. I'm ashamed of you too.

Yeah, everyone will remember this won't they.
Don't get me wrong, I love Ireland but jesus, what were people thinking when they voted 4 dustin? Suppose there wasnt anything else to vote for!!

There were several other acts to vote for. People were probably thinking that the Eurovision is a pointless competition, and it should be given no more attention that it deserves.

Anyone ashamed of themselves or Ireland because of this really needs to step back and take stock of their situation. If this is the worst thing in the world, then you really haven't got anything to worry about.

After seeing the other acts, I am damn proud that we sent a turkey in a pimped up shopping trolley. We should have won.

Sounds exactly like the same reason we sent Fr Ted to Eurovision :)

I'm quite sure the other Eurovision countries were quite offended by having a badly made puppet entering the competition. They take it very seriously, as did we until we stopped getting anywhere. Now we see it is "LOLZ Eurovision", when 10 years ago it was all "pride in your country" rubbish.

How could anyone possibly expect a rubber chicken to win?

So sending a drag queen or heavy metal rockers (ironically a group similar to Lordi entered You're A Star that year...) would have been any less embarrassing?

Donna and Joe, Brian Kennedy and Chris Doran; they were mortifying because they were rubbish and cheap but it looked like we as a nation were totally oblivious to that fact. At least with Dustin we appeared to be finally in on the joke...

I do think it was too extreme in many ways, but I don't think any of the EuroSong finalists would have done better. I heard one group that put in a song, while I didn't hear their song I did hear other original material they had and it was fantastic. Very edgey and very different. I like the look of the French entry.

Thing is the east europeans (and a few west ones to ) just dont get ' how's yore ma ,dublin slang loike ,yanowarimeen lingo, irish houmor ' .

'irelande du pouit' with a scruffy puppet turkey was lost on them :D

There's no question that the event is an embarrassment or that it rewards tack. That doesn't mean Ireland should stoop to this level, but its what our country has done all too willingly in recent years.

Look at the entries that won us so many competitions over the years. I don't think any of them could be described as vapid/outlandish/over-the-top/choose what superlative you want. Then compare any one of those winners with that piece of puke we sent in this year. The 'song' itself (and I use that term loosely) was a poorly veiled admittance that we haven't won in a long time and will hop on whatever bandwagon is going to succeed. Comparing our winning entries from the past with last night's entry is like comparing Schindler's List with something like Epic Movie. I mean is anyone honestly surprised we weren't well received?

We didn't qualify for the final and nor did we deserve too. Maybe next year the heads behind the Irish entry will try writing an actual song instead. Even if we don't win we might escape with some dignity in tact.

Errr...Brian Kennedy was one our best performers of recent years, finishing in a respectable 10th place, meaning we didn't have to go through the qualifiers the year after. He may have been mortifying and rubbish to you, but a lot of people obviously liked it if he was only one of ten to get through the semis that year into the final, and finish in a top ten position.

Donna and Joe: I'll agree with you on them.

Chris Doran: Just another banal ballad.

Must be the first time I've seen Eurovision and dignity mentioned in the same sentence.

Were those songs that amazing? I mean Dana was cute back in her day but the song was no artistic masterpiece...

It's funny how people are complaining when they send out a Turkey for this years competition while seemingly forgetting that we had Dervish representing us last year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Speaking of Turkeys why are Turkey even allowed enter Eurovision? Israel too for that matter! They ain't in Europe and they ain't got a vision ... beyond rampant Zionism of course.

As an aside why am I banned from the Ladies Lounge? Why am I banned from most places come to think of it!

We should send out Jim from the coors he has all the talent, just never got to showcase it.
    Go Jim.

I completely forgot about Dervish, they were absolutely dreadful.

I think the point is though that last year we sent Dervish who are a very talented bunch of musicians and they did terribly. This year we sent a Turkey puppet who did terribly. That's pretty much both ends of the scale covered.:D

    Jim from the coors

If we were to do anything like that it should be Mick from the Guinness.

At least Dustin got into a semi-final.

...and, what, you don't think the Men's lightweight four rowing won't? Eileen O' Keefe (6th @ '07 World athletics Champs), Robert Heffernan (also 6th), Olive Loughnane, Paul Hession, the track cyclist whose name escapes me, Jessica Kuerten....

Dustin was an absolute disaster; it would take a sporting catastrophe in Beijing to match his performance! :)

No, no, no, no, no, Kurten maybe - but she must leave the etoricoxib at home.

Where's your sense of persecution? Dustin should have won!
Is it our fault if [part of] the rest of europe doesn't catch the joke in a brilliant send up of the vacuity of dance music?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

Ahhhahaha :D caught only the start of the Eurovision last night. The man dressed up as a horse dragging the body around behind him was hilarious. Swedish botox surgery woman is scary

I don't get why people are so ashamed that we're not in the final. Ya, I feel sorry for Dustin, but life goes on!

I've spent minutes thinking about how we can win next year and I have come up with a few ideas:

    1. Europop - Ireland can't really do this so it might not work.

    2. Hot girl in short dress singing something brilliant and different and original. Again, Ireland can't really do brilliant, but the different and original bits might work!

    3. Someone dressed up as a monster with a gay man ice skating around him and a girl in leather doing some mad dance moves.

    4. sDoom's band enters that 'lesbian seagull' song.

Sorry, Janeybabe, one flaw in your plan: it's the men who wear the leather in Eurovision! :D

How about we enter U2, with Rosanna Davison and Glenda Gilson randomly having a a bitchfight, naked, in a pool of mud in the background? :p

On second thoughts, that's probably too conservative to win the Eurovision!;)

Not by a long shot. But still miles better than the lame joke we sent in this year

I have to admit I sort of like the idea of sending a puppet to the Eurovision but the song was p!ss poor and Dustin is about as funny as root canal surgery. His voice grates, his accent is difficult to understand and I'm sure references to Terry Wogan's wig sailed right over the heads of the good people of San Mario and Armenia.

Oh well, not that it matters anyway
