am i stupid?

for some reason automatic updates has been turned of on my machine. I was tried going to the secutity centre to turn them back on but it says it is unable to do so and to go to the control panel were i have automatic updates selected. so no joy there then either. i then went to the services.msc thing and it wont allow me to turn on the automatic updates either. i can click to start it but as soon as i click out it is disabled and stopped again.
any ideas

Is Automatic Updates set as 'Automatic' in the Startup type in the services.msc window?

it wont let me when i click automatic it just straight away reverts back to disabled

Make sure your Anti-virus is fully up to date and do a complete scan in case an infection is stopping it from running. Also run an anti spyware programme such as Ad-Aware or such like. Not saying it is a virus or malware but it will help narrow down what is going on.
