    Because teenagers going to the Gaeltacht, with all those hormones and pheromones flying around the place, can't possibly be expected to sit in a reserved seat? (Or any other seat, for that matter) ;)

    They do this every year. I imagine they want to gave how many they need to expect and so encourage pre-booking.

    They can already. I think the normal limit is 25kg, but 50kg is allowed for children attending boarding school. Or somesuch.

    are some of these special trains? Some of those (13.05 ex Dublin on 16/7, 08.45 ex Galway on 7/8) don't appear on the online timetable.

    Easiest way is to go onto the Irish Rail website here:
    http://www.irishrail.ie/your_journey/special_offers.asp?action=list&specials_origin=HSTON&specials_destination=GALWY

    Then select the train that you want, click continue and it will list the stations served in a drop down box.
