I hope so, they've had long enough to do it right.

I am really looking forward to this.

Not having an XBox360 I'm not too 'up' on the whole ingame XMB thing. I know this is something that playstation owners have been looking forward to for a long time. I know the main thing for most people will be the access to their friends list but what other benefits does an ingame XMB bring. Why's everyone getting so excited?

It lets you send people messages while you're in a game.

As someone who doesn't like spending an hour typing a short message with a controller, and who has a laptop for contacting people, I really don't see the big deal myself.

TBH I think it's just something people like to bring up to complain about because it's not there, and it will barely get used when it is there.

Hmnnn fair enough, I knew about the messages aspect of it but with all the complaining and all of the excitement I thought there must have been more to it.

the only reason i think i will use this is if i am playing a game and i get a message i dont have to quit the game to read it.

so if i was playing GTA and my brother asked me to join him in a game of COD i can check the message mid mission in GTA and then make a desicion.

handy but i wasnt going to burn the PS3 because it didnt have it.

imo it will make a huge difference to the online experience for ps3, extremely frustrating trying to organise any sort of game with GTA online with the current system. means checking over and back to a pc or quitting the game to check ps3 messages.
the messages can be somewhat slow using the controller, although the predictive text is handy, but this will give me a reason to buy a wireless keyboard
once they get this first stage integrated, im sure ingame personal music is only around the corner

Will this work when watching dvd or bluray. That would be very handy.

I guess it could. If they can do it when a game is being played I can't see why it wouldn't be applicable when watching a movie.

The in game XMB isnt a big deal to me.It will be handy for reading a message if you get it but nothing I'm too excited about.

This,on the other hand, is something I've been waiting for! They should have had it from the beginning. I mean GTA Vice City on XBox had it. I hope they release an update with this soon.

I agree, I thought they should have had this feature on release too. But I don't mind waiting for it.

What other features do people think Sony should include in future updates?

id like to see some animated themes to be honest, like the wave (for example a fishtank), or being able to assign a video to play in the background

OS controlled custom soundtracks ala 360 implementation IS NEVER coming to PS3 due to patents Microsoft hold.

The only way to have custom soundtracks on PS3 is for EVERY game to be patched and support this feature. Sony have released a SDK with custom soundtrack support controlled by the game being played not the OS.
Games which support this are Burnout Paradise & SSHD.

In short if you want in-game soundtracks in your PS3 games, moan to the developer of the game not Sony as there is nothing Sony can do about it.

is there not 2 possible work arounds to this??

1: ps3 being defined as a computer entertainment system. Not a game console
2: integrate the whole xmb interface, and the xmb media player being incorporated is just a huge plus. obviously it would use a lot more memory but doesnt actually specify that a media player is accessed from the game.

    patent : http://www.google.com/patents?id=mx93AAAAEBAJ&dq=gaming+soundtrack

Microsoft don't have a patent on multitasking- if the PS3 happens to be able to run an MP3 playlist through XMB at the same time as a game (which shouldn't be hard to implement) then that sorts us out just fine.

I don't think that will fly at all, its still music controllerd by the OS of the PS3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,888 ✭✭✭AtomicHorror

No... I think the novelty factor required in a patent makes it essential that the hypothetical dashboard-controlled user music has to have some element of control from the game (thus making it a user-defined soundtrack rather than just a playlist) in order for it to be considered in violation of the patent. Otherwise it's just normal multi-tasking implemented on a non-PC hardware platform. Any effort to patent that very broad notion would be legally challenged into oblivion.

So we don't get "user-defined soundtracks" unless Sony licence (or challenge) Microsoft's patent, but all johnny_adidas wants is "ingame personal music". An mp3 playlist running in the background while I play Warhawk is not violating any patent.

I wonder why Sony haven't added a feature where you can use images on your hard drive as a screensaver. It seems like an obvious one to add. At the moment am I right in saying that there are no actual screensavers for the PS3?

Technically there is. Folding @ Home is tightly[ish] integrated within the PS3 OS. F@H can be configured [Press Trianlge in XMB while F@H is highlighted] to start after 10, 20, 30 minutes of idle PS3 time.

    Then F@H has a screensaver.

Obviously, only if you use F@H and have an internet connection.

F@H is also an example of being able to listen to music while using it. Does that show there shouldnt be a patent problem?

It music feature is controlled by the F@H application not by the PS3 OS.
360 custom soundtrack feature is universal to all apps and is controlled by OS.
