It's a terrible tradgedy but since it's in China it won't get the coverage or the response it deserves. Same with Burma.

Now if it was in the U.S. or one little blonde girl from England - that would be a different story.

I ain't donating a cent to this disaster and I acknowledge it is a disaster. I remember reading a thread about the possibility of a damn bursting and it genuinly scared me.

But China has money reserves and it will survive.

I pay 41% tax and the government gives €800 million to Irish Aid who no doubt do great work.
I give my money to the government who give it to worthy causes and some not so worthy causes. So spare me your posts on disasters, I've done my part and you won't see me giving money to collectors on the street.

What was your point anyway OP? And the reason you doubleposted?

What a pathetic response. A real poster boy for apathy here.

Most saddening picture of the whole bunch was the parents(?) holding the limp body of their child(?) and crying

    +1.

Micmclo you should be ashamed of yourself.

I agree though, this isn't getting the coverage it deserves. Absolute tragedy and I hope those who were injured make it through.

I'm not informed about this kind of thing, but was this in an area prone to earthquakes/on a fault line?

This girl has showed her most beautiful smile after she got saved, when her legs and arms are all broken. she only said to herself 'be brave' when people are moving her out from relic.

Her life has stop on 20s after she saved 13 kids in earthquake, she was killed when she was trying to save more.

Very sad looking at those pics. Wish I could do something, but I'm not really in the financial position to do so, nor do I have the time. Sounds harsh saying I have no time, but it's a difficult thing to say none the less.

??? Its been the main headline for BBC world all week, have RTE not been covering it?
That would explain why I haven't seen more threads about this in here I guess.

Yes, but then a lot of countries have cities on fault lines, look at Japan and western USA. I was talking to a friend who lives somewhere near there, he said that quakes are common and usually not very strong. This one was unusual.

This was a terrible catastrophy :( , the chinese have been fantastic in their response and have really gone all out in the rescue. Soldiers have risked life and limb (and some have paid the price) to rescue people, those men are true heros.

really heartbreaking to see some of those photos. I havent seen or heard much about this at al as I've been doing nothing but college work, havent seen a tv in weeks. it's really terrible and it definately won't get the coverage it needs and deserves. I expect it's almost gone from the news already?

Micmclo, you're an ass by the way

Well it was still the top item on BBC news online until yesterday when the US went and flew over Venezuala or something, and now Burma has retaken the second spot on the BBC page page due to their "government" finally acknowledging that it did get a little bit windy the other week so pushing China off the front page. Also the NYTimes still has China high up on their front page and US news organisations are not renowned for their coverage of non US events.

+1 it is his choice and we have to respect that (of course we don't have to understand it). Charity should be exactly that and no one should force anyone to donate. I would add that no matter how rich a country is it will always appreciate the help (if it wants it) (especially when the devastation is on such a massive scale) - look at the aid that the US got after hurricane Katrina for example.

The Chinese ex-pat community here have raised money and sent it to the Chinese Red Cross. I've heard that many Irish people have donated a lot too (as is often the case with Ireland and donating money in times of humanitarian disasters).

Haven't watched Irish news recently but certainly on the BBC and NYTimes it's been getting lots of coverage.

There's to be a candlelit vigil this Sunday evening (7:30-9) at Smithfield if my sources are correct. I'm sure people can donate there if they so wish.

On a serious note, terrible tragedy. Seeing the pics gives me a bigger insight into it. Lot of hard work going on over there.

It's been big news in the US since it happened. I watch the news every morning and evening, and it's always one of the top stories. From what I've seen, they've been praising the Chinese response to the disaster.

Well it sure beats Bushs response to Hurricane Katrina anyway.

Ah right. Yeah I'm aware there's quite a few cities on fault lines alright, I just feel it's somewhat irresponsible of the governments to allow high rise buildings to be built in areas prone to such incidents. Anyway, there's no need to get into it in this thread.

Evangelicals will blame this on their opression of Tibet no doubt. Spooky coincidence that.

    34,000 is an insane number.

I think America is so enthralled with it because it is one of their rivals and yes, the disaster was responded to amazingly by China. First thing I thought of myself last week was how much quicker the response was in contrast to Katrina. And I bet you don't have the military pushing civilians around, either.

are these words from the people who talking about human beens and human rights all the time?
I guess all of life should be respected except you type of people who has no heart inside, only live for political reason.

yen, what is your connection with all of this? Were you there when the earthquake struck and are you the photographer behind these pictures?

I wished I was there, but I am not. as my young age, I should be there to help. and only the thing I can do is that transfer the information and let more people know what is exactly happening there.
all of pictures and news are copied from websites.

Or better yet, how the f**kwit president turned away help from other countries.

    =-=

In other news, the USAF does what it does best. Fly two C-17 Globemasters with 200,000 pounds of relief supplies to China. Not the first time they've done this, and I doubt it'll be the last. Or course, you won't really read about it in the newspaper...
