What's a good steel shaft for irons??

I'm getting some new irons soon. Thinking of the cavity back Callaway X Forged ones - not sure what they're exactly called. Just wondering what shafts to go for.

I have Dynamic Gold shafts custom fit from a few years ago. They're x100 but I'm not as good these days so looking to bump down to something S-flex, preferably with a high kick point.

I don't really like rifles. They feel heavy and cumbersome to me. Wouldn't be all that interested in going with dynamic gold again - surely there's something new and better out there? What's this Project X I hear a lot about?

I got a set of X forged last week and they're lovely. I got them with Project X 6.0 rifles. As far as I know all Project X shafts are rifles, but however if you find rifles too heavy, you can get different swingweights in them. Your best bet is probably getting custom fitted for them.

Yeah my brother is now insisting that I get rifles. Aparently Project X and Rifle shafts are one and the same. The patent is just being sold around the place...

I will get custom fitted anyway.

I have the project x in the x forged too, 5.0 in mine. I find them to be a fair bit stiffer than the equivalent rifle shafts and am glad I have the 5.0, would equate them to S300 roughly

You should nknow ot that it is not that they are the 'same' as rifle or that the patent is being passed around, they are the same company royal precision, in fact they are called 'rifle project x' shafts, says it right there on the label. They are just a particular model in the range.

That's good to know cos my bro was recommending 5.5 which I thought sounded very soft having hit 6.0, 6.5 and played a few rounds with 7.0 in years gone by. I expected to go to about 6.0 but between what you've said and my bro who knows his stuff I'll most likely go with 5.5.

Sure we'll see what the custom session says.

5.0 = Regular
5.5 = Intermediate
6.0 = Stiff
6.5 + = Extra Stiff

well thats what the specs on the website say, what I am saying is that I find them to play much stiffer than the equivalent 'regular' in other shafts. eg they are at least 5.5, more like 6.0 in a flighted rifle and S300 in true temper.

If your playing off 9 I suggest getting a set of Regular Shafts maybe ladies???

Handicap doesnt really come into the equation to be honest .... I know people playing off 10 or higher that use stiff shafts and then on the otherhand I know people playing off less than 5 who use regular shafts. It's basically down to your swing speed and your ball striking ability ...

If you want lightweight quality steel shafts, try some nippon pro's (maybe the 950's or the slightly heavier 1050's).
Both lighter than DG R400's or S300's, or standard rifles. Think Project X rifles are heavyish and low launch, so probably not what you said you're looking for.

Have you ruled out graphite? The grafalloy blue iron shafts are supposed to be very good
