Members of the Irish Stammering Association will be in Galway this month to launch a new self help group for adults who stutter. A self-help group provides a forum for adults to discuss their speech difficulties and provide mutual support and encouragement.
ISA has been successfully running a self-help group in Dublin for over 10 years. Now, with a plan to extend a network of groups around the country, Galway is one of the prime locations to be established. Self-help group meetings involve discussion about stuttering and how it is affecting people from week to week. Meetings also focus on practical activities to use in everyday situations. People who stutter often have difficulty in situations that fluent speakers take for granted; e.g. using the telephone, ordering food in a restaurant, asking directions.
Meeting other people who stutter can be a vital part in dealing with stuttering and not letting it hold people back from achieving what they what to achieve in life. Patrick Kelly, Chairman, Irish Stammering Association, stated, "You don't have to be alone in your stuttering, meeting people who have shared similar experiences of stammering, and who are working on their speech and can provide great support and inspiration for any adult who stammers. There are ways for adults to ease their daily difficulties through specialised support and therapy. Self-help groups are a valuable way to explore this."
The day will be open to people who stammer aged over 18, and interested professionals. We regret that we cannot offer any services to people under 18 at this time.
The event will take place on Saturday 24th May 2008 at 2 p.m., Harbour Hotel, New Docks Road, Galway City.
