ankle injury

Got my first injury last week since I started back running last year. After about 1 mile warm-up, got severe pain in my ankle. Felt like I twisted it but I did not notice it happen. No pain when walking and no swelling. Gave up the session and did the Rest Ice Compression Elevation stuff.

Tried again two days later but pain came back after half a mile. As my old NB trainers have had about 350 miles, I suspected they might be causing the problem so I tried my (older) Nike Air Pegasus and ran for 4 miles without pain. Decided I needed to put my hand in my wallet and went out and bought a pair of Asics 1130's yesterday. They felt great but after less than a mile the pain returned ...arghh!!!

I then experimented with putting the insoles from the Nikes into the Asics and felt definite improvement (not 100%). Main difference seems to be the Nikes have higher arch support.

Now (the purpose of my post ), where do I go from here?
    • Keep going with the Nike-Asics hybrid and hope it does not come back - I am tempted but it would not be the smart solution.
    • Go and see a professional who can help me figure out and fix the problem - but who? A physiotherapist / Sports Injury Clinic or a Chiropodist?
Anyone out there have similar problems, if so who helped? Not looking for names more which type of expert to turn to.

I had someting like this before, but it wasnt down to the running foot wear it was my work shoes, remember if your in work your foot wear there is asa important as you maybe wear them for 8 hours a day, i tend to keep away from flat shoes now.

But may not be the case with you

Sounds like you have fallen arches. My advice would be to go to an osteopath or someone similar to check out your feet and alignemnt, you may need orthotics or some sort of treatment, however this can expensive. I am going through this at the moment and currently waiting to get the orthotics back and I hope they make an improvement.

In the immediate future stick with runners which have good arche support and you have less problems with but I would advise you to get checked out.

Went to Physio last Thursday, she identified fallen arches and alignment problem. She suggested some exercises to strengthen my glutes and hamstring stretches. Orthotics are an option if they do not work. But went for a 20 min run yesterday on grass without any pain in good supporting shoes, so hopefully I won't need them.
