Reasonable Golf Club Membership in Cork Area??

Looking for some information on reasonable membership to golf clubs in Cork. I've thralled through the threads and can only see info about Dublin, Kildare etc.etc. Have checked a number of websites looking for info but golf clubs tend to not give out this information or if they do the rates seem ridiculous.

Just wondering if anyone has any information on reasonable membership rates in the Cork area??

Any help as always is greatly appreciated.

    Iv been looking around myself..
You can buy a green fees card in Mahon for 600E and you can play away for the year but you wont get an official handicap.
Frankfield is 550E to be a full member but its on a hill and not enjoyable for me at all.
Green fees card in Mahon is the best deal iv seen.

How far you willing to travel?

Some of the city club are offering deals @ the moment, spreading costs over 3 years etc. places like youghal, fermoy & bandon offer decent value in my opinion. If you're in west cork, Lisselan is a super little track.

    Hi,

I have heard Frankfield is now down to €200??? Great price but really not enjoyable golf, is there anywhere else doing deals for under €500 do you reckon?

I think Blarney is free to join and then €1200 for the year

Lee Valley is €300 to join and then €1300 a year i think (€25 a week)

Mallow had a thing last year where it was only about €800 all in for the first year there. Think its about €960 a year after that then.

Like others said Mahon, is €660 a year i think but you get no handicap or anything. Its basically just a green fee pass. Course wouldnt be anywhere near as good condition as the likes of Lee Valley or Mallow though....

They are the only ones i know off the top of my head (aside from the likes of Muskerry, Douglas etc...which are still too expensive)

If you want cheap golf - look at Mahon or Frankfield. If you're prepared to pay a bit more for better golf, look at maybe Lee Valley or Mallow. (Im sure there are others like Bandon, Fermoy etc...too but i dont have any prices for them)

I am looking for a quality course but at the moment I am caught for money(getting married next year), so I am trying to stay under 1k, I live in Shanakiel so Lee Valley/Muskerry/Blarney would be ideal for me.

I have played Frankfield but must remember to bring a Defib with me the next time. I like Mahon, theres a bit of fun, but no handicap= no good, love playing the opens!! I sent an e-mail to Fermoy GC this morning but heard nothing back yet, I like that course although might be a bit far away.....we'll see.

I could just pay the €200 to Frankfield and play the opens, €20 a week for approx 7 months works out about €600 so still a save!!!

It would help if I was any good!!!:D

MItchelstown €680 with no joining fee. Some weak holes but overall great value and a decent test too.

Charleville Golf club are doing a deal for distance membership for €475. includes GUI levy and €50 for the bar / restaurant . 27 holes . i think you have to be "living" a certain distance from the course . http://www.charlevillegolf.com/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭ssbob

I am a Mitchelstown Native so I would tend to be there quite alot but as you said some weak holes ie. all the new holes that were added 8/9 years ago, drainage is shocking. The too are doing distance membership but you need to be 170km away!!!! Only 358euro for that..

    I must look into Charleville.........

Any idea of the price of Waterrock/East Cork etc??

I see your location is Midleton, why not try Cobh. New course. Think they are doing a pay by the month deal of some sort. No clubhouse yet though. Only played there once but it seemed a decent enough track.
Youghal maybe is another option. Not mad about that place though.

Blarney is €100 a month and this now includes membership of the gym which is very good. Any they're throwing in a €20 food voucher each month. One of the things about paying by the month is you could walk away from any time if not happy without having paid out a lump sum at start of year

That sounds like a great deal aster99. I have never played the course there but I heard its pretty good, I am living in Shanakiel so thats only about ten mins from my place. I was actually looking at joining a gym aswell for the summer.

I will give them a ring today and revert back.

The gym is very good there too in the hotel, modern equipment plus the pool is very good. Location wise it would great for you

Do you know if Douglas Golf Club are taking in new members and what they charge? I believe Fota Golf Club has reduced their membership enormously but you have to pay for 5 years up front, and commit to a minimum of 15!!!

WIll you remain in Shanakiel after getting married? If not I would join somewhere like Blarney for 100 a month for now until you know where you'll be based. Cobh is doing 100 a month too and although a bit hilly it's better than Blarney in my book.

    Hi Mr. Mickels,

Douglas is a €14k joining fee with an annual sub of €1,318 thereafter, a bit pricey in my league.

I think Fota is a €15k joing fee paid in three lumps of €5k plus about €1,200 a year thereafter

Are you a member somewhere now?

    Hi Captain,

Yes I will remain in Shanakiel, bought a house here 4 years ago, I think Blarney is my best bet, the only problem I have with it is that I am afraid they may be under pressure for money and would hate to join somewhere for it to close after 6 months(I know I wouldn't lose money, just the hassle of it)

I have played Cobh and found it a great course however probably needs a few more years maturity.

fota is 5grand up front and another 5grand in 5 years and same again in another 5 years.you still have to pay 2grand each year sub from the outset.the lotto is my only hope on that one.close to opting for cobh.its good deal i feel all round.

Thanks for that. No haven't been a member of a club in years. Just started going to the range again this year, but hitting the ball fairly ok there, want to take it to the course when they weather improves. At those prices I think I will give Douglas a miss!!!

I was told East Cork Golf Club in Midleton is good value, apparently they have removed the joining fee so you only pay the annual sub. Not my favourite course, I recall it being tight and fairly short, but I must admit from memory they have by far the friendliest and warmest club in the county, they used also be quite good at the club team events. I might give them a call but would favour a course that is a bit more open and longer. Then again, it might just be cheaper to pay green fees in waterrock and the others. I hadn't played in years and after a few rounds might lose interest again.

I'd go to Muskerry I were you. It's a good member's club and you'd be there in about 12 minutes. Have heard the joining fee is reduced dramatically too. Only downsides IMO are that it's hilly and some holes get water logged in the winter.

I wish...sadly it's 2,089 per year. That does include most of the weekly competitions during the year though (only the big ones are excluded). There are other offers included though such as discounted room rates in the hotel / lodges and cheaper spa membership for those inclined!

Agree about East Cork - was a member for years after blowing in to Cork and they were very welcoming and friendly - really miss the club spirit and still play with some of them regularly in the opens. But well worth looking at.

Fermoy is another with good club spirit, but you're only getting about 8 months there - pretty miserable, damp and cold for the winter - very boggy course.

Castlemartyr are crying out for members - and always in peak condition - although not sure what the new rates are since NAMA got hold of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 298 ✭✭mr.mickels

Was told Cork Golf Club are now taking in members surprisingly, anyone confirm this or know what their rates are?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

If if I was you I'd go to blarney for the value
Leevalley would be a more mature and better course about 20 mins from you but out of budget or muskerry similarly

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,677 ✭✭✭staker

See Fermoy have dropped membership to €599 from €860

Not really true any-more. Played out there a few times this year, most recently last week, it's in pretty good nick this year.

Still a bit soft in places but across the road has come on a lot, don't mind the trek across as much anymore.
Some of the rough is still pretty thick and between plugging and long grass you've got to keep your eye on the ball.

All the more reason to be hitting the fairways. Once those trees start to mature it will be a fantastic part of the course.

    +1

Nearly nicer than the 'old' course imo.

There's still a lot to be said for the 4th and the final 5 holes in fairness, great character. The outside holes are great for big hitters though, lots of scoring opportunities.

Did they tarmac the pathway? I don't like the 7th which is the 1st hole on the other side of the road, so hard to play after walking over because it is uphill...................but love the 13th(I think) which is the 1st hole when you come back, a true dogleg right which you definitely need a good rescue club or soft 3 wood off the tee and yet have 7/8 into the green, those trees around that green are probably 60-70 years old too so it really is mature!

Poorest hole on the course is the Par 3 17th I think!

The pathway up to the tee box? Not tarmacced but has compacted hardcore so pretty solid. I do like the 7th for the same reason as you dislike it, my playing partners are generally finishing a cigarette at the time we reach the box so I'm happy to take that advantage while they wheeze away!

13th is a great hole, so easy to get wrong on the first two shots but a great scoring hole in the summer time when the ball dribbles up onto the green. That 17th is pretty pedestrian to be fair but the 18th makes up for it, club selection is vital for the second shot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,677 ✭✭✭staker

Toughest hole for me is the 15th,a par is a rare score there.
Favourite is the 14th,anything left is swimming...
All for €680 to me it's value, but then I'm biased

    Lads,
I'm a beginner at golf, but really am getting hooked on it! I've been looking at joining a club, so that I could get a handicap.
I've checked with Blarney, they have the €100 a month deal, plus a Men's club levy of €89.50, and thats the total price.
I'd like to get an idea of other club prices, but am unsure about what a membership entails.
For instance, one post in this thread says Fermoy is now €599. Is this the total fee, or is this the fee to join, and then you have to pay a membership fee as well?
Once you become a member, do you have to pay for each round you play?

Blarney also told me that to get a handicap, I would have to play 3 rounds and have the cards signed by a member - does this mean you have to play with a member? (I don't know anybody there).
    Thanks for any info

That €599 is the total membership fee for the year ending December...

    No,only competitions,usually €5-€10

You'd have to hand in three cards signed by a member. That means three full rounds playing with a full member to get your handicap.

Hi there Getcover, I recently joined Blarney(in the last 3 weeks) great track but haven't been able to get three rounds in with a member yet, if you are going to join, just pm me and we can organise to go around together and sign each others card perhaps?

Mitchelstown has no joining fee at €680, Fermoy has no joining fee at €599 to Dec year end, Frankfield is only €450 but you would want one leg shorter than the other for that......you could get a distance membership to somewhere like that place in Clonmel(only €150) but depends on whether you want to use the course in the evenings or not?
