My friend told me the other night that she doesnt use any contraception

and that with her last boyfriend, they had sex about 90 times in the 6 months they were together

but she never got pregnant once

Would I be overreacting to think/suggest that one or both of them could have fertility issues???

That or they could be lying. I'm not going to lie lass, the odds of that happening are remarkably slim, so something is not going right then. But to be honest, i'd say question the truth before questioning their fertility

I'm assuming they were using the withdrawal method? Risky...

Does she want to get pregnant?

    Fertility issues? Who knows?

STIs would be my main worry here.

depends, there are certain times in a month when a woman cant concieve... if they played it that way then yeh they could be fine!
    if ot then.. mabey...

Hi, I'd be more concerned with the fact that she throws caution to the wind like that.
Did she give you a reason for not using any protection?
    It seems very careless.

She tells you this and you come here? Did you happen to tell her that she is an idiot?

No, a couple isn't thought to be infertile unless they have gone a year of trying (i.e. making sure to have sex during every fertile period). For all she knows, she may have got pregnant and the embryo died - only 1/3 of conceptions are ever born.

Sorry to take this off-topic, but it won't be for long, and this really needs a response...

That's not actually true. There are times when it's less likely (maybe even a lot less), and times when it's more likely but to have the attitude or belief that there is ever any time when a woman (of menstruating age) *can't* conceive is dangerous, and asking for trouble.

oh well thats what happens when you listen to closely to tv.. :pac:
i know its never 100% for record, but then neither are condoms or the pill! just thoughts it was about 98% effective or something! ah well!

Apparently your friend is a liar, a slut and an idiot if the first ten responses are anything to go by. How it's anyone's business I fail to see.

did she just volunteer this information to you?hope you told her she was an idiot.

    Hi Op

Yes it is very possible to have regular unprotected sex for six months and not get pregnant, not always but it can happen. I was trying for a baby and it took me that length of time, for some people they can get pregnant on the first time, you can never know when you get pregnant for sure.

Took us three long years of trying before it took, but I reckon she's pretty lucky (or not being 100% truthful).

I fail to see why this is any of your business, esp posting it on the net.

maybe the "friend" is really the OP and is looking for advice!!!

I fail to see how this is a personal issue quite frankly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,382 ✭✭✭✭AARRRGH

    Well, there are two scenarios:

    A. The friend and her boyfriend are aware of the risks, but don't care, or at least are happy to face the consequences. If this is the case, the OP should butt out of their sex life.

    B. The friend has some kind of emotional problem, and doesn't fully grasp the consequences of what she's doing. I think the OP is right to be concerned if this is the case.

Ya, its possible to do this, a person I know was at it for 2 years unprotected and they both thought one of them was infertile, until, surprise!!!!! preggers! Way to disprove the theory.

How on earth is this a personal issue? At the end of the day regardless of whether they have or have not fertility issues it really doesn't have anything to do with you.

it can happen. a friend confessed recently that she and her ex never used contraceptuion in the three years they were together. Im full sure she has a fertility issue as he had kids before. she has had problems with her periods before.

I was just stunned that she would take the risk though! its quite unfair as so many couples are careful and get caught out.

If anyone has an issue with a post or thread use the report post function
instead of clogging up the thread with unhelpful and off topic posts.

I used to be stupid like that too, i never went as long as your friend did without using protection but there were times i didn't. Those times i didn't i was lucky enough to not get pregnant but there was one time it happened and voila i became pregnant but i suppose what im saying is your not going to get pregnant every time you have sex and there are alot of people out there whom it can take them up to and over a year to concieve when trying, i don't think the issue here is that your friend has fertility issues, i think it's that she is being irresponsible when it comes to stds etc.. You may think i can't talk but me and my long term boyfriend had both been tested when it came to that. That is something i would never risk.. getting an std is something that is horrible, a baby is a blessing. I think it's good of you to worry about your friends fertility issues but i think that maybe you should talk to her more about the risks of stds and even aids and the such before you start delving into the idea that she might have fertility issues. It's a very sensitive and as such a private subject and i really don't think while you mean well that it is anyone's business but your friends and her boyfriends.
