Good multiplayer games for the PS3

Recently picked up a PS3 for GTA IV, but am looking into getting some good multiplayer games now. I'm going to be getting the new soul caliber and Street fighter when they get released but until then is there any good multiplayer games you can recommend.

Also, by multiplayer I mean playing against people in the same room not over an internet connection. Also, I'm not a big fan of most sports games.

Is there any good coop, beat-em-up, race games out for PS3 atm?

The co-op in Rainbow Six: Vegas and its sequel are very good. Resistance is another good co-op option. COD4 has a splitscreen deathmatch which can be good.

Any particular reason you don't want online options? Also, look out for Haze next week.

well I have a few friends I play online with but I'd rather have people in the room doing the whole winner stays on, bumping shoulders to throw them off, showboating a win... etc you know all the fun stuff we did before we had to put on gay headsets to talk to people who lived 50 yards down the road.

I got Burnout bundled with my PS3 and was a bit dissapointed by the lack of split screen support. Is there any good racing games for the PS3 that do have split screen support?

Pick up Calling All Cars, Super Stardust HD and Tekken on the PSN store, they're all pretty cheap and all have good multiplayer modes. Calling All Cars is a great competitive four player game while SSHD has great Co-op play. Tekken is a beat-em-up, obviously

As for racers, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue does split screen, I don't think there's much else right now though. I believe GRID has a split screen mode and its out in a couple of weeks, might be a good option.

Ridge Racer 7 has split screen - nowhere near on a par with GT5 but might do the trick.

Even better than co-op games or online games are split-screen enabled online games, such as Warhawk.

Fight Night is good craic split screen (not online).

COD4 with split screen is god awful, I mean you can see exactly where they are all the time so it takes the fun out of it.

what about multiplayer games with the wife? She used to play Street Fighter but also likes coop games like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe... etc, or simple competition games like puyo puyo.

Is there anything like this out for the PS3?

Virtua Tennis 3 is only €20 from videogamesplus.ca and it's a legend in multiplayer. C'mon for €20 you know you can't go wrong!

Edit: Hmnn it seems to have gone up in price a little as I'm pretty sure I ordered this for €20 shipped. Still it's just €20 itself and shipping isn't much.
