Would You Do It All Again?

If you were given the chance would you study medecine/become a doctor all over again? I know a lot of doctors and med students and I just get the impression that some of them aren't being honest with thenselves let alone anyone else. Instead you get 'It's great but you have to really want to do it' response which depending on the person can be downright genuine but sometimes I don't think they mean it. I only ever met one person who stuck it out for a whole career but told me they wished they'd done something else.

I'm sure MOST doctors do enjoy their job and I don't mean to come across as negative by assuming that there's a large proportion who don't but I'm simply interested as to what percentage, if any, maybe wish they'd considered anything else from the start or else did start off in medicine and and went on to pursue something different.

For me, it would depend on when you ask me.

I'm on a 24 hour shift today (sunday). Did another on friday just there. So, right now, I'd say I wish I did something else :p

But ask me after I resus a baby or save a life, or do something that properly changes someone's life, or get a handmade thank-you card from a patient and I'll tell you it's the best job ever.

Me too - i did a friday/sunday split 2 weekends ago, a wednesday, a sunday and tomorrow another wednesday and then another sunday - thats 6 calls in 3 weeks!

    can't wait to switch rotations!

How often are you guys on call? I'm on general surgical call at the moment, 1 in 6, then 13 days off after I do a Sunday. Week nights are grand but Saturdays and Sundays complete bust my chops.

I've just moved hospitals, so no longer do 24 hour calls. They're just a ridiculously inefficient use of doctors. I can't believe people are still doing 72 hour shifts.

The paediatric surgeons at my hospital still do this. they're operating on babies with only 3 or 4 hours sleep in a whole weekend.

    That sounds dangerous.
Of course, if anything happens, the doctors will get the blame and not the system that caused it.
