Want to use my phone when I'm on hols over there so that I can phone ahead and book accomodation etc. Will be on a road trip.

Is it possible to buy a sim package over there that will do the job?

    T-mobile do a 'pay-as-you-go' card.

If the phone isn't so you can be contacted by others can'y you do it the old-fashioned and cheaper way and use payphones?

Cingular, sprint [via virgin mobile] and T-mobile do pay as you go but they don't really sell the sim cards. Most american cell phones don't use sim cards and the few pay as you go options are a pain in the hole as you can't get credit in alot of places and it costs you credit to both send and receive calls. If your irish mobile is tri-band it will work in the states, just put lots of credit on before going.

Its alot easier to pop into any bodega and buy a calling card - $20 one will last ages esp if your making local calls and theres at least two pay phones on every block in the big cities.

When I lived there (12+ months ago) cingular would give you a SIM card for free so long as you popped credit on it when you bought it. It's not something they publicize though, so visit one of their shops and ask for it.
