Anyone know if Gunns is open on a sunday ? I was walking past this afternoon intending to go in but they were closing up (at 5 ?!?!?). Figured I'd get what I was looking for (C-41 kit) in camera exchange so didn't stop to ask if they were open tomorrow. Camera exchange recommended Gunns. Doh. Although when I said Gunns were closed already he offered to do the film right there and then If I had a couple of minutes. Bless them :-)

The conversation in Conns which I tried just on the offchance went something like this:

Me: "Hi, have any chemicals for C-41 ? Kits ?"
Sales guy: "Sure do. Thats for doing your own film right ? Black and White ?"
Me: " uhh .. no, colour"
Sales Guy: "oh. Like slide ?"
Me: " uhhhh .. no, like C-41. Negative"
Sales Guy. "Ohhh right. No. No we don't (sounds relieved), Try gunns on camden street"

Cheers all. No chance of getting up there during the week. Might just get it from retrophotographic instead. There are a couple of other bits and pieces I can pick up at the same time.

I've XPro'd my own slides before , which I guess doesn't really count :-) However, having just payed 8 or 9 euros a pop for a bunch of fuji mailer envelopes, I think I'm going to stick one of those E6 kits onto my list at retrophotographic. I figure it can't be any harder than C-41, any wierd colour casts I can correct at scan time ...

I'm half thinking about getting some E6 chems for my 4x5's...

Not sure yet, tbh, I've got about 25 full dark slides (B&W and E6) waiting to be developed, I don't know whether I want to risk it myself or pay for them all to be done.

The guys in Camera exchange are lovely actually. I get bits printed in there & I have to say they're really helpful! :) (The one across from the market)

You've got all the necessary hardware in college right ? 4x5 dip tanks and all that ? That'd probably be the most expensive bit if you were to do it yourself. E6 processing is apparently more temperature sensitive than C-41 even but if you can maintain that then the whole process wouldn't be any more complicated than doing B&W. I think Julie has mentioned doing her own E6 a while back ...

I did some cross processing recently with chemicals that were 3years old needless to say we all held our breaths that the chemicals were still ok.

Best peice of advice is don't wear anything nice incase you spill any chemicals on your clothes 'cause they'll get destroyed.

As for the slide they turned out interesting I'll scan them someday soon and show you.

So anyhow ... Ended up getting into Gunns this saturday. Retrophotographic has a 20 GBP P&P for what I wanted so I figured gunns would probably be cheaper. I was sort of -half- right. They only had the 5 litre C-41 kit (makes 5 litres of working solution) for 47 euros. After doing the sums a bit and working out how many rolls I'd get out of it before the chemicals expired I still figured It'd be cheaper than getting it done in a lab.

Next pratfall, the last time I did C-41 the developer concentrate was just one bottle. This (fuji X-Press) kit has 3 different solutions for the developer. Two of these solutions are in 45ml bottles. I plan to make up 500ml amounts at a time in the hope that the concentrates will last longer, so into the developer working solution I have to put precisely 4.5 ml of concentrate.

Got a couple of rolls sitting at home in tanks waiting to be done so I'll report progress if anyone is interested.
