Autofocus bust - need a service center

    Hey all,

I just got back from my hols today and need to find a place to repair my 400d.
My daughter (5yrs) was playing with my camera on a beach when i was snorkelling (i know!).

Now the autofucus is bust. I think the focusing screen is scratched and may need a replacement, but i think might just get it cleaned professionally while im at it? The sensor and mirrors are 100% ok and i used the camera on manual focus for the remainder of the holiday and got some good shots.

Is this a waste of time / money? (how much would it cost?)
And is there any places I can take it too in Midleton or Cork?

Its over a year old and I bought it from England.
    Thanks in advance

ISS are ok although they don't fix any kit themselves - they send it direct to Canon UK. I sent in a 17-55 2.8 which was front focussing and it came back tack sharp after two weeks in the UK.

You can also contact the Canon repair centre in the UK directly and get an approx cost from them before you send it over.

Well just been emailing the below.... Canon Ireland

Seems there is a fixed price for repair/servicing of the EOS 400d regardless of the issue.
We have a fixed price of €222 (including VAT) for the eos 400d.

    Dublin Camera [Dublin.Camera@canon.ie]

    Camera Repair
    CCI
    Canon Ireland
Arena Road, Sandyford Industrial Estate, Dublin 18
    Phone: 01 2052407
    Fax: 01 2958141

You can get replacement fcusing screens on ebay for €25?
Is this normal for canon to charge so much? I'd say at best the camera body is only worth about 300-350

I'd avoid that crowd down in potabello, had a bad experience there.

But there is another place on dame street, just at the corner of georges street that does repairs...

I changed my focusing screen in there and was 35€ they have to open the top of my camera to replaced it, so I'm not sure if its a good idea to buy on ebay.

The sensor was also dirty and i wanted to do both services, they did both very well and just charged me for the focusing screen...

    Sounds good Duchovny,

I wont be in dublin for a few weeks, hopefully there will be somewhere in cork that can do it?

Edit: I can remove the focusing screen handy enough in mine, there is a metal clic that is easily accessible whan you remove the lens.

Deegs it seems high because you were quoted the fixed repair charge,
i.e no matter what the fault is they are going to charge you that to fix it
fuji and canon do this now

you can cut out canon ireland by sending it here http://www.camera-repair.co.uk/
directly,it's where canon ireland are going to send it anyway

Well I got an answer back of them also...

Its €155 (£125) fixed charge from tham also and its about €30 to ship to england.

So €185 to send to england
    or
€222 to send it to canon Ireland

This is bloody ridiculous! I'd consider it if i had a more expensive camera, but this it is only a 400d. Is there no shops that can do this?

    anyone use them before?
They seem the cheapest at €180?

I presume if i get it done by canon i get a warranty but i doubt i do if i send it off to UK? Can anyone clarify?

Deegs, glad I could help, just to clarify I work "in the Business"
you will get a three month warranty on the work done from Colchester, exactly what Canon will give(as I said it's where it's gonna be sent anyway)

I've dealt with them many times,no problems
