Could just be dirty, might be worth buying one of those cleaner disks

Its probably broken, I went through two drives years ago on an old machine. They just stop playing certain discs and then eventually crap out all together.

I tried a lens cleaner too, it didnt do anything.

    Replace the drive imo.

Drives are pretty cheap these days, so might be best for him just to get a new dvd burner. You can clean the drive, but it will probably give trouble again a few months down the line

Might also recommend a new computer too, something running win98 can't be too good.

edit: sherifu got there before me

Assuming he has a tv, he could just buy a dirt cheap dvd player?

Test the DVD ROM in a newer pc first or you will give yourself untold hardship tying to install a faulty drive. Stick it in the 98 machine after and see what happens.
