Hi im wondering can anyone help me, I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and i am having a minor problem with the display on the screen
When going on to certain websites the screen seems to size down with a white bar each side(like going from 16.9 to 4.3 on a tv)
It only happens on some websites (this one s fine) but it gets quite annoying after a while . Anyone knw if there is a setting i need to change?
Any help would be much appreciated

ITS cos your screen resolution is very high, if you set screen resolution to 1024x768 ,problem will be solved, right click desktop, screen to change resolution, display propertys, move slider bar to 1024x768.everybody has a favourite resolution, most websites are designed 4 1024 res .

erm, never seen that issue, but it may be as gamer suggest if you have the desktop res set higher than the native resolution of the screen or at an incorrect aspect ratio. My lappy screen is natural at 1200x800; 15.4" wide. but again this has never happened to me and may be based on whatever Screen hardware Dell uses. I'd give them a shout. Even out of warranty they'll tell you whats causing it, hopefully. I've found them to be a sound bunch of people in the past.

Hi gamer ive tried reducing the resolution as you suggested but that just makes everything look stretched , My screen was on 1200x800 , but I dont know what size it actually should be, its a 15.4 inch screen with a true life screen and im running vista
Ive tried a few different screen sizes but the only one that looks right is 1200x800 but thats when i have the problems on certain websites,
I think ill give Dell a call anyway
    Thanks to you both

It might be the websites themselves.

1200x800 is pretty reasonable for a 15.4 inch screen.

Link to them and let us try replicate

Ive tried a few different screen sizes but the only one that looks right is 1200x800
That's because that's the monitors native resolution. Leave it on 1280 x 800 otherwise everything will look bigger and more blurred.

If you could link to one of the sites that has this problem and then post a screenshot of it, we'll be able to see if anything is wrong.

might be worth adjusting the view settings in your browser or trying another browser to see if it works better with the particular sites

    ctrl + "-"
or ctrl + "+" is an easy way to zoom in and out on webpages

on my toshiba laptop 5105, i set res to 1024 x768 for web browsing ,on many websites i ,d get blank white sections on both sides of a webpage at 1200 resolution, download ,download firefox 3 beta, it has view, zooms,150,200,plus 10per cent ,etc to increase txt size .EVERY WEBSITE looks normal,2me, i can see no sign of any stretching at all.
Most website are designed for 1024 res, try 1280 x1024 res ,use boards.ie or slate.com as test viewing sites.with 1200 res i find i have 2 keep increasing the txt size on websites to read it easily.MAYBE you just need glass,s.

okay, longshot, but if you have a nvidia graphics controller right click on your desktop. in the context menu launch the nvidia control panel (or you can do this from your computer control panel)

Now, under Display settings go to "Change flat panel Scaling" and ensure the setting is switched to üse nvidia scaling" when this is enabled you shouldnt be seeing any black/white bars.

But again, a long shot in the dark.

Do the white bars just show up within the browser window or is the browser window and the entire laptop display resized?
    ...
    sounds mad!! Take a screenshot...

funny i didnt think to ask that M450.

to take the screen shot press the Print Screen button, then go into paint and select paste. Save the image and attach it to your next post.

Also links of the site in question would be generally useful as a reference.

I was just thinking it would be really silly if the sites in question were just a set width and since her display is widescreen, the browser would fill in either side with white space... :p like Bebo for example...

Yeah, I was begining to wonder if that werent the case:

    Image1-4.jpg

    White Bars of Doom?

Nothing you can do about that OP. That's dependent on the site completely.

well at 1200 res on some websites i get text in the middle
with approx 2inchs of white blank space on the right and left sides ,i use mostly firefox 2 .these spaces disappear in 1024 resolution.I Presume most sites are designed for 1024x768 resolution.I notice opera browser has a fit to width button ,with 20,right up to 1000per cent zoom modes.
