Is the file type the correct one? Does the music play on your computer alright?

Is it an iPod with a hard drive? If so do you hear the usual whirring noise when you try to play a song?

If it's a hard drive it's probably corrupt. Did you drop it? Sounds like what happened to my iRiver after I dropped it. Can happen from running with it too.

Is general navigation working, i.e can you skip from one song to another (if so I think that would indicate the hard drive itself is okay).

Or just doing a new sync in iTunes - does it copy files to the iPod correctly?

Does holding the play button switch off the iPod (ie is the play button responding to other commands)?

When you say you've done a restore twice - that really a full restore from iTunes or a reset by holding iPod buttons etc? ie if you've done one and not the other, then try the other!! :)
