Poor sound? (Ubuntu)

Hey, installed Ubuntu recently using Wubi, and i've noticed the sound quality isn't great. Well actually the quality is fine, but the max volume is pathetic, when i turn stuff up full blast i can only kind of hear it, it'd be similar to ~25% when on Windows.

I tried turning up the volume of the programme too, no luck...

Is there a way to boost volume?

Try running 'alsamixer' in a terminal. It should give you access to all the levels for your particular card. You may find that one is set too low.

If that doesn't help post up the make and exact model number of your sound card if you know it.

That alsamixer thing worked, there was one dial that was lower than the rest, i upped that and now my volume is a lot louder... Cheers..
