xps m1530/8600m/bioshock/driver

I just installed bioshock on this laptop. It informed me that there were compatibility issues with my driver and that I should install a new one. And linked me to a download page:

    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

    A couple of questions:

The download page only lists desktop cards. Don't mobile versions of these cards need different drivers?

The version of the 8600m in the xps has ddr3, whilst most of these cards have ddr2. Is a different driver required for cards using different RAM?

Guess I'll find out in a minute anyway

    They are.

But for the 1530 you need to go to Dell themselves. I have the same Laptop.

Chances are your driver is up to date though.

Drivers are universal, no drivers cater to cards with different memory types. Best off getting the latest release from laptopvideo2go.com, Dell are probably not as up to date - I know when I bought a Sony about 2 years ago the 'latest' driver on the Sony website was about 10-12 releases behind the latest Nvidia one.

You can use desktop drivers no problem, all you need is a modded inf file so that it will install on your mobile card - you'll get them from the above site.

He doesn't need them anyway. Dell drivers are good enough to run that. I have the same(ish) Laptop, the same drivers and the same game (Bought it today for €15), and it's running grand on mine as is...in fact I'm surprised at how well it runs. At near maximum settings...

But still, it's good to know a different manufacturer specfic driver isn't required. I'll file that away for future use. Just need to change the .inf file and download from there

There is definitely a difference if you get a good set, I was using the stock drivers but experienced considerable amount of stutter (fairly common problem with older 16x.xx drivers and 8600) in certain games, now using 175.xx and most games have increased performance by several frames.

Not a huge deal overall, but it is for a budget mobile card where a few frames means the difference between OK and Great at higher settings.

    Fair enough,

But I think he has the latest driver...well, latest enough. Latest Vista 32-bit on that site driver is the one released by Dell that is used on the XPS1530. I know there was a recent desktop driver release though.

I'm running the game on pretty much full settings, and it runs brilliantly on my Laptop. So the hardware can handle it, and the driver, if he has the same one as myself, is more than up to the task.
