John & Roy Scale New Heights for the Jack and Jill Foundation by Corporate & E-Marketing

John O'Regan an operations planner based in Connolly station and Roy Galvin is a train driver based in Cork will soon be leaving trains behind them for a while as they head to Peru. John & Roy will take part in the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Marathon and aim to complete one of the most extreme marathons in the world!

The race will take the hardy runners high into the Peruvian Andes following the ancient Inca trail over an undulating course including 3 high passes all of which are at an altitude of over 4000M and eventually finishing in the Inca Capital of Machu Picchu at an altitude of 2400M. To put this into perspective it would be like running a Marathon and climbing / descending Carrantouhill (3414 feet) 3 times starting from sea level. The weather during the event will add to the challenge and temperatures during the race can range from below freezing at the start (04:30am) to 30’C towards the finish with possible rain and sleet. The Inca Trail normally takes 4 days to complete and their goal is to cover the distance in less than 9 hours.

They are doing this marathon to raise awareness and as much money as possible for the Jack and Jill Foundation. The expedition is being funded by Roy and John with support from irishrail.ie and the Great Outdoors Dublin.

All donations made through their “MyCharity.ie” website will go directly to the Jack and Jill Foundation.

    About John & Roy
For Roy, this will be a major challenge, as he competes in his first extreme marathon having started running less than 2 years ago. Work and family commitments contributed to what he describes as an “unhealthy lifestyle”. In August 2006 at the age 34 Roy decided to adopt a healthier lifestyle. He contacted a colleague in Dublin, John O’Regan after reading about his achievements in an internal staff magazine. With support from John, his family and work colleagues Roy began to train and change his lifestyle. Since then he has lost 3.5 stone and 6” off his waistline. In April 2007 he completed an 8 mile race in 63 minutes 34 seconds and in October 2007 he completed the Dublin Marathon in 3 hours 53 minutes.

For John it was a similar story to Roy’s. He took his lifestyle and health into his own hands in 2001 and in doing so has lost over 2 stone in weight. He started running with a few friends that were training for the Dublin Marathon and since then he has completed five of the seven continents Extreme Marathon challenge which include Marathon des Sables, The Yukon Arctic Ultra, The Antarctic Ice Marathon, The Dead Sea Ultra, The Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon and has also ran a Marathon at the North Pole. Follow their training progress on Roys Blog or click here to make a donation.
