Anyone got any information on exchanging a 70-something D plate for a ZV? I've been told it can be done once a vehicle hits vintage status...

    Thanks,

    Gil

That's new to me. I'd be interested in any links too. Silvera is the resident plate expert. He might come on here and comment

    Yes,you can change a 70D1234 type plate to a ZV12345 (once the vehicle is over 30years old) but not a ZV12345 to a 70D1234.

Nah, one extra digit doesn't make too much of a difference. Still preferable to '7x xx etc'...

I think they are the most appalling attempt at a registration number ever..
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?
Who thinks 5 digits ZVs are ok,
    And who hates them...

Quick one, don't mean to hijack...
For a classic which looks more authentic 78D**** or ZV*****
Is it literally a matter of taste or.....

Well, after some thinking i reckon its down to the style of the plates,i saw this pic on another forum and i like the way the plates were in the old style pressed metal format, not the new cheap aluminium type.
I wonder is it the numbers or the layout of the plates that we are getting hung up on,i would have no problem with 78D if they were in this layout.

I can't see why people get such a bee in their bonnet about 5 digit ZVs!

I got a 4 digit one in Santry last year, btw.

The only ZV xxxxx plates that would do me must have a couple of 1's in it to fit the dimensions and borders of the old plate specs.

I'm not too bothered about the number as long as it fits the layout. As can be seen above six old big 3 1/2" digits fit a plate fine. ZV 11xxx would fit ok too. What would have been better to do first would have been reverse them from prefix to suffix.

I always hated ZV plates no matter how many digits. I got my Alfasud registered last week and went for the 78 KY ***.

Its not ideal but to me its looked better than a ZV plate.

No that Sud just looks hideous, though I doubt "ZV"'s would look any better. The red and white style shown further up would look best on that car !

Euro plates are awful on an older car !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,943 ✭✭✭BeardyGit

I'd rather drive my yoke on a ZV plate, than drive around with a county specific plate that's nothing to do with either where I live or the heritage of the vehicle in question. Anyway, it's a couple of years away yet, but I'll be top of the queue once she qualifies.... ;)

Those EU plates look manky on that lovely 'sud. Would you not get a black on red rear plate made up?

i think the actual year plates are cooler then the pre-historic zv plates... makes the car look irish and gives you the age of the relic....

Well if you are to be extremly pedantic about it, the ZV numbers are county specific.Though its not easy to figure them out.

    just my 2p.

.......well okay it tells you the year but I dont feel it makes it look Irish, since an Irish reg'd '78 Sud would not have numbers like that. The whole Europlate thing is just wrong IMO.

BTW I have a 64D on black & silver raised digit plates, and a 4 digit "ZV". I prefer the ZV !

There's no hyphen between the year and county letters, so technically it's illegal ;)

We don't see enough red/white plates around any more. However, I've seen a few people just use the modern aluminium pressed plates with modern lettering and no EU flag, and paint the rear plate red - they look godawful IMO.

Even if it did, it'd still be technically illegal. Unless you take the ZV option, it's supposed be current style Euro plates. :D

If you take the ZV option or have an original Irish reg it should to earlier spec. Proper 3 1/2" digits and none of these Frenchie or UK sized digits ;)

It might look a bit better if you spaced it as ZV1 234, at least you start there with a 1.

Yep, its all wrong isnt it!!The old clare issue was ZV500 to ZV700,only 200 cars, and if you space the new ones like mercmad suggested it will look something like this:ZV1 7201,which looks nothing like an old irish reg either.Stupid government idiots....

Yes, its the lesser of two evils, try to make the plate as original as possible and you should be ok.

Id say silver on black are ok, i would be very surprised if the cops ever got arsey about them,as long as the plates were in good order, and legible!!:D

Q1) Yes, but only if the vehicle was registered before 1st Jan 1987.
Q2) I've never been hassled 73DXXX in style (b) and I don't think anyone else has (or very, very few) judging by the numbers of non-compliant (but legible) plates in circulation.

(Please amend if I've anything factual wrong below. I don't necessarily agree with it all either ;) - my main gripe is that there is no age-related scheme/format)

    Number plates:

    1) Cars registered up to 31st Dec 1986 can display styles (a),(b),(c) or (d)
    2) Cars registered between 1st Jan 1987 - 31st Dec 1990 can display styles (c) or (d)
    3) Cars registered from 1st January 1991 must display style (d)
    4) Only 30 year-old cars with ZV registrations can display styles (a),(b),(c) or (d)
    5) Any used imports not in category 4 above should display the style current at the date of importation and not date of first world-wide registration.

    Styles:

    a) time forgot - 1986 black background with with white/silver/grey digits (front and rear) or translucent backlit digits so as to appear on black background. 89mm high characters.
    b) 1969 - 1986 black digits on reflective white (front) and reflective red (rear). 89mm high characters. This option was introduced 1st December 1969.
    c) 1st Jan 1987 - 31st Dec 1990 style - new format with black digits on reflective white (front and rear) at least 81mm high characters.
    d) 1st Jan 1991 to present: current style - Euro symbol, IRL and county name in Irish. 70mm high characters.

Additional information can be found on plate specifications in:
Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations, 1982
Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) (Amendment) Regulations, 1986
Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) (Amendment) Regulations, 1990

Cool.....the reason i ask is that i've been stopped twice by the gardai but just to admire my car (you know the old "me father used to have one of these"), only comment from one was if she was irish because of the three number/letter arrangement ,and when i told him it was english he said he wouldnt know the difference anyway ,except if it was ZV or 62 D....Didnt even comment on the fact i havent got around to re-registering it (maybe i wont bother ....) Ignorance is bliss ..:D
