    Hi Folks,

We are thinking of getting a nice relaxing break and Sorrento seems to tick all the boxes at the moment.

Can anyone help regarding the best ways to get there? What airports should I be looking at? We don't mind travelling a bit on a train if an airport has regular flights in from Dublin.

Thanks in advance. if you need any more info, lettuce know.

naples is the nearest airport to sorrento and aer lingus i believe fly direct, from naples there are a number of different options by boat and train.

we went from naples to sorrento by train a service called Circumvesuviana which goes from the main railway station in naples straight to sorrento (the train passes pompeii on the way :)) http://www.massalubrense.it/circum.htm

you could also fly into rome and then take the train to naples, it would add approx 2 hrs to your journey but rome is a wonderful city and deserves to be seen for a day or two if you haven't already been

Typically you would fly into Naples , Sorrento is about a hour and a half away from there by bus.

A quick look at the flight costs at the moment show it coming in at about 290 for return tickets , Im sure it can be had cheaper.

Sorrento is probably one of the best holidays we had in recent years , there is so much to do , Walk up Vesuvius and have a look down the crater of a live volcano , Visit Pompeii and Herculaneum , and the best of all , a drive along the Amalfi coast , one of the most beautiful trips Ive ever been on.

Sorrento makes Dublin look positively cheap though, its one hell of an expensive place , but its a holiday town so its to be expected.
We were staying in the Grand hotel Hermitage , which is about 15-20mins outside Sorrento , and within walking distance of a lovely little town called San Agata , which was really really cheap , and we ended up spending most of our evenings out there.

i agree with mathias, that area is a great place to holiday, but he forgot the isle of capri :( about 20 minute ferry from sorrento, a day trip over there is a must and the view you get when you take the ski-lift type thingy that brings you to the top of the mountain is majestic

btw naples is a horrible place and get out of there as fast as possible

I never went to Capri , it was on the agenda but there was too much else to do and it got relegated for a future return trip which will definitely happen.

Agreed on Naples , a nasty place , dont hang around , theres nothing to see there.

we flew to rome and got the train to naples and then onto sorrento. A word of warning, don't let anyone help you in the naples train station or you'll be stung. Guy grabbed our bags and brought them to the train. Wanted 50 euro, I gave him a fiver and he was mighty pissed but eventually fecked off to look for the next victims.

Thanks for the updates and words of warning folks, much appreciated.

I see that Aer Lingus are extortionate for the dates we want to go. Falcon holidays seem to do packages there (via First Choice charter flights).

Gonna cross check some of the resorts on tripadvisor later and see if anything comes up good..

    Cheers again.

Yep be very careful in Naples! Just get outta there as fast as ya can. You mention Sorrento but you should perhaps look at Positano and Amalfi as well. Positano is a short distance away and Amalfi is about a 40 min drive. Amalfi is gorgeous and there's a lil village called Minori just down the road from it, and also a village called Ravello which is up on a hill top. We stayed there last year and are going again this year. I couldn't recommend it more, the place was fabulous! We went to Positano for a day and the shops are great, it's full of windy streets!

Also went to Pompeii, that was cool. My folks had already been the year before and told us Capri was the biggest waste of money ever. It's not that amazing of an island and it's so expensive to get over and buy anything there (even a cup of tea!) so we didn't go. Ischia (I think that's the name of it?) is another island there and is meant to be beautiful as well.

    Enjoy!

the sorrento ferry costs 9.80 euro or 14 euro return depending on speed, not exactly that expensive considering it costs 5 euro on the nightlink :D

we got dinner in anacapri for about 12-13 euro, again no more expensive than dublin

    Hi folks,
We are planning to take a similar trip and thought it best to post here rather than start a new thread. We are staying in Italy for 7 days. The plan is to spend 2 days in Rome and then on to Sorrento. We will also do a day trip from there to both Pompei and Capri. We've went onto http://www.trenitalia.it to look at train timetables. We can see from Rome to Naples but can't see a price. Any idea how much this is? We can't see how to get from Naples to Sorrento and back again. Any websites for this? How regularly do trains or buses go and how much roughly would it cost?

Any tips on must sees and accommodation appreciated also :D

the high-speed train from rome to naples costs anywhere from 25-36 euro depending, put in tomorrow date and you will get the prices by clicking on "buy" on the right hand side of the screen when the times come up

the slower regional train which takes at least 2hr 35 minutes only costs 10euro

the train from naples to sorrento is every 30 minutes, its a different company completely from trenitalia http://www.massalubrense.it/circum.htm this is the official site but its in italian, cost of one-way ticket from sorrento to naples is 3.30euro and you can buy them at the station http://www.vesuviana.it/

a day trip around the amalfi coast visiting towns like Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori and Ravello should also be on the agenda
