SOCCER STARS HELP BUS EIREANN TACKLE THE BELT UP MESSAGE

A host of top Cork soccer players will go back to school over the next few weeks as part of a major safety initiative aimed at encouraging children to wear their seat belts on board the school bus.

Cork City FC stars such as Joe Gamble, Colin Healy and George O’Callaghan will join forces with Bus Éireann school bus drivers and visit primary schools in the Cork area over the coming weeks, as part of the Belt Up Safely Campaign. On each school visit the Cork City Players will give out a free Bus Eireann/Cork City FC training bag to each child that will include pens, rulers and stickers featuring the belt up safely message.

The initiative is aimed at driving home to students the importance of wearing seatbelts on board the school bus. Seatbelts are provided for students on all vehicles which operate as part of the Department of Education/Bus Éireann School Transport Scheme.

Erica Roseingrave, PR Manager for Bus Éireann said: “Bus Éireann is delighted to be supported by Cork City Football Club in this important safety initiative. Sports people and footballers are important role models for children and the players’ endorsement of this safety message and their time, going into schools with our school bus drivers, is very much appreciated.”

Stephen Ryan, Club Promotions officer, Cork City Football Club said: “Cork City FC is pleased to support Bus Éireann in this important community initiative. Our players are seen as heroes to a lot of young kids in Cork, therefore I am sure that we can be successful in getting this vital message across in a fun informative way that children can identify with. We will be blitzing as many schools as possible before the summer holidays and I am sure the children will love the free Bus Eireann training bag with the Cork City FC crest on it.”

The campaign will be launched today, May 13th at 12.00hrs at Bishopstown Training Ground in Cork City. Photographers and reported are invited to attend.

Players will visit a number of schools in the Cork area from May 20th to June 18th 2008. The players will chat with children and emphasise to them that wearing a seatbelt is vital to their safety.

The Belt up Safely initiative complements the 2008 Bus Éireann School Transport Summer Safety Roadshow which will visit nearly 30 agricultural shows in towns and villages around the country this summer. As part of the roadshow, customised school buses operating as mini cinemas will be touring the country, to spread school transport safety messages to children.

Bus Éireann operates the School Transport Scheme on behalf of the Department of Education and Science.
